Beavers Battle for 90 Minutes, Fall to No. 11 USC
November 03, 2019 | Women's Soccer
CORVALLIS – Oregon State's women's soccer team (10-6-2, 2-6-2) put up a strong battle for 90 minutes but fell to No. 11 USC (14-3-1, 7-3-0) on Sunday afternoon, 1-0.
"I am really proud of the effort today," said head coach Matt Kagan. "The USC player hit a great free kick and there was nothing we could do about that. Our athletes battled for 90 minutes. There are no moral victories but a lot of positives to be taken from this game. I am proud of the team and now it's time to get ready for Oregon on Thursday that will obviously be an awesome rivalry. We are excited for it."
Senior Ashleigh Fonsen got the first shot off for OSU after the Beavers were awarded a free kick from three feet outside the 18-yard box but USC's goalkeeper was able to make the save before it found the back of the net in the lower left corner. McKenzie Weinert and Paula Leblic followed with a strong run in the 14th minute of play that Leblic got a shot off of before it was called back due to being offsides.
Fonsen got another free kick attempt directly in front of the goal from 25-yards out that was four inches from pushing OSU added.
On the opposite side of the field, USC was awarded a free kick from 30-yards out that was converted giving Southern California the 1-0 lead in the 37th minute.
Oregon State was close to evening the score in the 38th minute when Fonsen attempted another free kick from the left side that was blocked by USC's defense. Freshman Sophie Conrad and redshirt junior Nicole Nickerson each attempted shots in the final few minutes of the half, but Southern California took a 1-0 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Weinert was able to get a shot in the 52nd minute that was wide. In the 60th minute, Weinert was tripped away from the ball giving OSU a free kick attempt from just outside the right corner of the box.
Freshman Brianna McReynolds made the final shot attempt for OSU in the 76th minute that USC's goalkeeper saved.
Sophomore Bridgette Skiba made three saves in goal for the Beavers while seeing 87 minutes of play. Redshirt senior Lindsay LaMont played the remaining three minutes in goal for OSU.
The Beavers finished the match with seven shots coming from five players.
Oregon State is back home Thursday, Nov. 7 at 7 p.m. for the final game of the regular season as the Beavers play host to Oregon for the Civil War and senior night.
