Beavers Beat Bears In Extra Time
November 10, 2019 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore.   – Raheem Taylor-Parkes lifted the Oregon State men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over California Sunday afternoon, as he scored his first Beaver goal seven minutes into the first extra time period to end the match.
Â
"I thought we started the match really well," said Oregon State head coach Terry Boss. "We let the emotion of the game get the best of us for a spell, but I was proud that we were able to come back in. We were able to focus on what has gotten us to this point, and I couldn't be more proud of our guys."
Â
Taylor-Parkes' goal came on a scramble in the box, as Joel Walker had a shot saved from close range. Taylor-Parkes was able to get onto the ball on the left side and put it in the net from five yards out.
Â
With the win, the Beavers move to 8-5-2 on the season, 5-2-2 in Pac-12 play. Oregon State has not lost a conference home match since November of 2017. California moves to 7-6-3, 3-4-2 in Pac-12 action.
Â
Oregon State out-shot the Golden Bears 18-9 in the match, and controlled 64 percent of the possession. Goalkeeper Adrian Fernandez held his second consecutive clean sheet, and his fifth of the season.
Â
The Beavers created an early scoring chance as Eric Diaz found Gloire Amanda in the box, but the forward lifted his shot over the bar. Amanda returned the favor minutes later, finding Diaz inside the 18, but the senior fired just wide of the target.
Â
Arnaud Deniel got his head on the end of a cross at the far post in the 21st, but it was just over the crossbar. Sofiane Djeffal nearly put the Beavers in front five minutes before the break, but his shot curled inches wide of the far post.
Â
Cal created a chance early in the second with a free kick from 19 yards out, but Fernandez made an athletic save to keep the Golden Bears off the board. Amanda answered with back-to-back shots in a few minutes later.
Â
Amanda got in behind the Cal back line in the 66th minute, but the Bears' keeper was quick off hit line, and got his hand to the ball as Amanda tried to lift it over him. Oregon State continued to press forward in the closing stages of the 90, as Djeffal set up Amanda for a bicycle kick attempt.
Â
Joel Walker nearly found the breakthrough in the 80th, as he blew through the California defense, but was unable to find the net. Taylor-Parkes had one last chance to put the Beavers ahead in regulation, but his shot was off-frame and the match headed to extra time.
Â
Djeffal nearly ended things in the 94th, but hit shot curled outside the frame. Taylor-Parkes finished the match minutes later.
Â
Oregon State will close out the regular season Friday when Washington visits Lorenz Field.
