Strenov Scores, Beavers Fall to Huskies
November 15, 2019 | Men's Soccer
CORVALLIS, Ore.  – Senior Loke Strenov found the net, but the Oregon State men's soccer team fell to No. 6/5 Washington 3-1 Friday evening at Paul Lorenz Field.
Â
"I think we started a little bit slow," said Oregon State head coach Terry Boss. "We used halftime to regroup, and to focus on sticking to the gameplan. In the second half, I think we had some more rhythm. We needed to be brave in big moments – there were times we did that tonight, and there were times we could have been more successful at that."
Â
Strenov's tally was his first career goal, and it came in the 69th minute, as the Beavers leveled the score at one.
Â
Oregon State ends the regular season with a record of 8-6-2, 5-3-2 in Pac-12 play. Washington finishes the campaign 15-3-0, 8-2-0 in conference.
Â
Washington took an early lead, as they found the net in the 11th minute. The Beavers responded by pressing forward. Gloire Amanda unleashed a shot in the 19th, but it was blocked. Joel Walker followed that up by putting a ball over the crossbar from the right side.
Â
The Huskies took a 1-0 lead into the break.
Â
Oregon State nearly equalized early in the second half, when Walker's far-post ball narrowly missed Adrian Crespo.
Â
Strenov capitalized on a loose ball in the box to level the score in the 69th. Amanda fired a shot that was saved, and Strenov was there to punch it in from six yards out.
Â
The Huskies retook the lead eight minutes later, converting on a cross from the left side. Washington added another shortly after to extend the advantage.
Â
Steffan Yeates had his shot blocked in the 81st, as the Beavers looked to get back into the match, but the Huskies walked away with the two-goal victory.
Â
The Beavers honored their seniors in a pregame ceremony, as the team recognized Eric Diaz, Strenov, Evan Sungvornrajasabh, Evan Munn, Anthony Atilola and Nikkye DePoint.
Â
"You're able to take a step back and look at these young men who have put their blood in the bricks for the program," Boss said. "They're going to walk away from here with life skills that will help them in whatever endeavor they choose to take on. They are going to walk away with a great degree. This isn't the result we wanted for these guys who have given so much to the program, but I am 100 percent sure they are all going to go off and be extremely successful in whatever they choose to do."
