Beavers Solid for Two Sets, Fall to No. 5 Stanford in Three
November 01, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
STANFORD, Calif. – Cecilee Max-Brown registered nine kills to pace the Oregon State offense, but the Beavers' volleyball team fell in three sets at No. 5 Stanford Friday evening.
With the loss, the Beavers' record falls to 9-13 overall and 3-8 in the Pac-12, while the Cardinal improved to 15-4, 9-2. Set scores were 20-25, 20-25 and 9-25.
"We battled pretty well for two sets," head coach Mark Barnard said. "But there were a crucial one or two points in each that we just couldn't get a kill or make the pass that we needed. Confidence rides on those points and we just didn't make the plays."
"We served significantly better tonight than we did last week and we had them in trouble in the second set. We had moments of really good play where we were doing some great things, but we didn't have enough of those moments and the moments didn't last long enough."
The Beavers trailed early with Stanford going up 5-1 and continued to open the lead to 13-7. OSU used a four-point run on kills by Cecilee Max-Brown and Lindsey Schell to close the gap to two at 13-11 before the Cardinal answered with four of their own to push the lead back to 17-11. The Beavers refused to go away though trading two points for one using a Kory Cheshire block and followed by a Cheshire kill to close to within 21-18. But the Cardinal held on to take the opening set 25-20.
The second stanza was much the same with Stanford pulling out to a 6-0 lead forcing an OSU timeout. The Beavers steadied but still trailed 10-4 before putting together four straight points including a combo block by Cheshire and Max-Brown and an ace by Maddie Goings to make it 10-8 bringing out a Stanford timeout. The Beavers pressed on coming out of the break with two more kills by Max-Brown and Amy Underdown to tie the score at 10-10. Another Max-Brown kill and a pair of Stanford errors put the Beavers on top 13-11. OSU still led at 15-13 before the Cardinal rolled off six straight points to regain the lead at 19-15. An ace by Underdown and another Cheshire block kept it a two-point margin but Stanford reeled off the final three points to take the second set, 25-20, to go up two sets to none.
Oregon State scored three in a row early in the third using kills by Haylie Bennett, Goings and a Max-Brown ace to go up 3-1, but Stanford soon went on a 6-2 run to take the lead at 7-4. An 11-2 burst from there put the Cardinal up 15-6. The Cardinal continued on taking the third set 25-9.
Game Notes: Cecilee Max-Brown led the OSU offense with nine kills and Maddie Goings added seven … Grace Massey accumulated a team-high 11 digs with Goings adding nine … Kory Cheshire recorded four blocks … Amy Underdown aced the Cardinal twice … Kory Cheshire recorded a team-best two blocks.
Next Up: Oregon State is back on the court Saturday at 7 p.m. to take on No. 20 California in Berkeley. The match will air on Pac-12 Bay Area.
