Volleyball Falls to No. 20 California in Four
November 02, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
BERKELEY, Calif. – The Oregon State volleyball team rallied to take stay alive in the third set, but fell to No. 20 California Saturday evening at Haas Pavilion.
The loss drops the Beavers to 9-14 overall and 3-9 in Pac-12 play, while California's record improved to 18-4, 8-4. Set scores were 15-25, 23-25, 25-23 and 16-25.
"We continued to struggle to make plays during crucial moments," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We served well again tonight and overall this weekend we were so much better than last week but our blocking for non-existent early in the match."
"We have a lot of work to do on our blocking and passing this week. We have a good enough offense to get it done, we just need to give ourselves more opportunities to run our system."
Senior setter Montanna Gubrud set career-highs in assists (41) and kills (three) while notching her second career double-double and Haylie Bennett registered a team-high 14 kills but it wasn't enough to overcome the Bears.
Oregon State was down two, 9-7, early in the first set until Cal went on a four-point run to open the lead to 13-7. From there the Beavers just couldn't make headway as the Bears took advantage to take the opening set, 25-15.
The Beavers responded in the second using a four-point flurry featuring back-to-back kills by Kory Cheshire to take an 8-3 advantage. OSU pushed its lead out to 15-9 as Amy Underdown knocked down a pair of kills and Gubrud put away an overpass. Cal answered with a 7-0 run to take the lead and steal the momentum. The teams traded sideouts until the Bears were able to gain the lead at 19-17. Cal opened the lead to 23-19 before OSU's Haylie Bennett and Underdown sandwiched kills around a Cal error to close the gap to 23-22. The Bears would hold to win the set, 25-23, taking a two set lead at the intermission.
California opened the third set by scoring the first three points, but the Beavers slowly crept back pulling within one at 9-8 on a kill by Bennett. The Beavers capitalized on two kills and an ace by Underdown during a 4-0 run to take the lead at 14-12. After pushing the lead to three, the Beavers fought back with four straight to re-take the lead at 18-17. Still trailing 22-20, Underdown went back to work with a kill and an ace to tie the score at 22-22. After a Cal kill, OSU reeled off the final three points to steal the set, 25-23.
OSU carried the momentum into the fourth set and quickly used a four-point run fueled by a pair of Serena Bruin blocks to grab the lead at 4-1. But Cal recovered going on a 10-2 run to take the lead at 11-6. The Beavers couldn't mount a comeback dropping the set, 25-16, and the match.
Game Notes: Haylie Bennett tallied a team-leading 14 kills and Amy Underdown knocked down 11 to pace the OSU offense … Montanna Gubrud registered her second career double-double with a career-high 41 assists to go with 11 digs and added a personal-best three kills … Four Beavers reached double figures in digs with Grace Massey leading the way with 14.
