Volleyball Falls to No. 19 Cal in Three

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Chloe Brown posted a match-high 11 kills to lead the Beavers' offense, but the Oregon State volleyball team fell in three sets to No. 19 California at Gill Coliseum Friday night.
The Beavers, who opened the Pac-12 Conference season last weekend 2-0 for the first time since 2004, took the loss dropping their record to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the league, while Cal improved to 12-1, 2-1. Set scores were 20-25, 22-25 and 14-25.
"We struggled against a big block," head coach Mark Barnard said. "We passed well and gave ourselves many opportunities but were just unable to capitalize."
The opening set was close in the early going with the score tied 11-11. The Beavers pressed forward with a 6-1 burst with kills from Haylie Bennett, Chloe Brown and Maddie Goings to go with an ace by Grace Massey to make it 17-12 and drawing a timeout by California. The Bears came out of the break posting a better block at the net and posted eight of the next nine points to gain the lead at 20-18. Cal continued with the momentum to steal the set, 25-20.
Oregon State took an early lead in the second stanza going up 5-2 capitalizing on several errors by the Bears. OSU continued to hold a three-point lead at 13-10 until Cal used a 5-0 burst gain the lead. The Beavers pushed out again with a 6-1 run to go back up 19-16. But the Bears had the answers scoring the next seven points to take a 23-19 advantage. Cal would hold on to secure the set 25-22.
Cal used an early 4-0 run to establish a lead at 7-3 to begin the third set. The Bears continued to add to their advantage another four consecutive points to make it 11-4. OSU would regain its traction but could not overcome Cal dropping the third set, 25-14.
Next Up: Oregon State is back on the court tomorrow evening to face No. 3 Stanford. The match is slated for a 6 p.m. first serve.
