Jones puts up 27 points
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women's basketball team rolled to a 95-41 win over Union Sunday afternoon in an exhibition matchup at Gill Coliseum.
Â
"It was fun to be back in Gill," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "It was great to be out here. It was exciting to share this with our fans, and I was really happy with the turnout. I know the team was looking forward to getting out here. I think we really settled in in the second quarter, and once we did that it was fun to watch."
Â
Freshman Taylor Jones led the Beavers with 27 points on 11-for-20 shooting from the floor. The center tallied 12 rebounds to complete the double-double, to go along with five blocks. Destiny Slocum finished with 16 points and five assists, while Mikayla Pivec narrowly missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds.
Â
Kennedy Brown recorded 12 points and seven boards in her Gill Coliseum debut. Aleah Goodman hit three triples to finish with nine points, while Jasmine Simmons and Patricia Morris tallied six points apiece.
Â
As a team the Beavers shot 52 percent from the floor in the contest, and held Union to 23.4 percent shooting. Oregon State also held a 55-36 advantage in rebounds.
Â
Pivec scored six points in the first 10 minutes as the Beavers finished the first quarter up 14-9. Oregon State exploded in the second frame, scoring 28 points to head to the break up 42-19. Jones tallied 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in the first 20 minutes.
Â
The second half featured more of the same, as the Beavers took a 66-32 advantage into the fourth quarter, on their way to a 54-point win.
Â
The Beavers will host their second exhibition of the year on Friday when Concordia (Ore.) visits Gill Coliseum (free admission). OSU's preseason slate will also feature a matchup with Team USA, Nov. 4 at Gill Coliseum. Tickets for that game can be purchased here.
Â
Oregon State is one of the most successful programs in the last decade of the sport. The Beavers have appeared in every WBCA Coaches' Poll since the end of the 2013-14 season. Four returning starters and nine overall letterwinners return from last year's team that went 26-8, advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight year, and played in the Sweet 16 for the fourth consecutive season. ESPNW has tabbed the Beavers No. 6 in its "Way Too Early" rankings the 2019-20 season.
