September 20, 2018 | Men's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Tres Tinkle was one of 11 college basketball players to get an exclusive invitation from the NCAA to participate in the Elite Student-Athlete Symposium in Indianapolis, Indiana.
"It was a great experience," Tinkle said. "They wanted to prepare you for the next level and life after college. There were a lot of presenters talking about various things like how to brand yourself in social media, money management, the NBA draft process, working with agents and mental health awareness."
Joining Tinkle at the three-day symposium were Kamar Baldwin of Butler, Barry Brown of Kansas State, Tyler Cook of Iowa, Daniel Gafford of Arkansas, Sagaba Konate of West Virginia, Josh Perkins of Gonzaga, Jontay Porter of Missouri, Killian Tillie of Gonzaga, Marques Townes of Loyola Chicago and Lindell Wigginton of Iowa State.
Some of the speakers included Dr. Katrice Albert, NCAA Executive Vice President of Inclusion and Human Resources; Carrie Cecil, CEO of Social Media Sports Management; and Clarence Nesbitt, general counsel for the NBA Players Association.
An elite student-athlete panel included former NBA players Brandon Johnson and Eddie Gill. Jahidi White was the keynote speaker.
"The speakers talked about the importance of always keeping a good image or yourself," Tinkle said. "To build connections, Make the right decisions. Be prepared for the next level and what we can do to maximize our potential and success.
"It was very helpful to have mock interviews with NBA scouts and NBA general managers. It was a great experience and something I know will help me to continue to improve on and off the court."
