Beavers Battle, Fall in Five to Ole Miss
August 25, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
AMES, Iowa – The Oregon State volleyball team went five sets for the second match in a row to open the season but this time came up short falling 3-2 to Mississippi Saturday afternoon.
The Beavers fell to 1-1 with the loss to Ole Miss (2-1) by scores of 25-23, 25-27, 20-25, 29-27 and 12-15.
Oregon State used a strong defense both at the net and in the back row to force long rallies, but couldn't overcome Ole Miss. OSU posted 15 blocks including nine by redshirt freshman Lindsey Schell and a career-high six by Maddie Goings. Grace Massey led the Beavers in the back row digging out 28 offerings from the Rebels continually recycling the ball.
"We've been solid defensively and are passing pretty well," head coach Mark Barnard said. "But we can get better and we're struggling to convert in transition. We need our hitters and our setters to be better to pull out these kinds of matches. We have had a lot of errors throughout the weekend, and sometimes in stretches. It is apparent we need to stem that. We can't afford to give points away.
The Beavers also used an improved serving game on Saturday recording six aces and reducing their service errors to keep things close throughout the match.
OSU trailed by five, 15-10, in the opening set before slowly climbing back into striking distance and taking the lead for the first time in the match at 21-20. Play continued in a back-and-forth until a kill by Schell and an ace by Massey closed the opening salvo 25-23.
After dropping consecutive close sets, including a 27-25 second set, the Beavers looked done falling behind 23-20 but timely kills from Schell and Haylie Bennett and a block posted by Goings and Serena Bruin tied it at 24 apiece. OSU staved off match point twice when back-to-back kills by junior transfer Amy Underdown gave the Beavers a 27-26 lead. Another kill from Schell and a block by Underdown and Schell kept the Beavers alive forcing a fifth set.
In the fifth, OSU led 10-8 and again as 12-11 but the Rebels rattled off four straight points to seal the match.
Underdown turned in her second straight double-double tallying 19 kills to go with 14 digs, both personal-bests in her short OSU career. Schell just missed a double-double with 14 kills and nine blocks.
The Beavers, who entered fall camp seeking to fill the vacant setter position, used all three setters of their against the Rebels, with sophomore transfer Allison Hughes taking the start and collecting 23 assists. Junior transfer Montanna Gubrud and freshman Maddie Sheehan also played later in the match with each registering 17 assists.
Game Notes: Junior transfer Amy Underdown led the Beavers with 19 kills. Haylie Bennett added a career-high 15 kills, while Lindsey Schell (14) and Maddie Goings (10) were also in double figures … Grace Massey posted 28 digs, Kayla Ellis added 10 and Underdown recorded 17 to give her a double-double … Schell finished with a match-high nine blocks and Goings added a career-best six blocks.
Next Up: Oregon State gets right back on the court later this afternoon to face the host, Iowa State (2-0) at 4:30 p.m. PDT. The Cyclones are ranked No. 21 in the nation to open the season.
