Third Varsity 8 Crew Leads Beavers Against Stanford
May 05, 2018 | Men's Rowing
LOWELL, Ore. – The 17th-ranked Oregon State men's rowing team faced No. 8 Stanford Saturday morning at Dexter Reservoir in the final tune up before Pac-12 Championships next weekend. The Beavers' Third Varsity 8 crew recorded the Beavers lone win of the day while the Varsity 8 and Junior Varsity 8 also turned in solid performances.
"The 3V had a real gutty race coming from behind to win and that was awesome," head coach Gabe Winkler said. "We knew the Varsity 8 would have to do something special to beat Stanford because they are having a really good season. It was a little frustrating to see them get dropped by that much, but this gives us some fuel for this week going into Pac-12 Championships. We have some seconds to gain but I think we can do it."
Oregon State's 3V8 consisting of Zach Niedermeyer, Ezra Glickman, Hunter Rust, Timothy Shearer, Tyler Gray, Andrew McSween, Austin DeMartine, Nick Taylor and directed by Nick West, earned the win over its counterpart from Stanford. The Cardinal beat the Beavers' crew off the starting line, but OSU walked back through the Stanford boat to take the lead by the 1,000-meter mark. The Beavers held off a late push by the Cardinal to win by three seconds with a time of 6-minutes, 25.56-seconds.
OSU's V8 crew, which is ranked 17th in the nation, faced Stanford's eighth-ranked boat in what will be a key showdown at Pac-12 Championships next weekend. The Cardinal, again, jumped to a fast start from which the Beavers were unable to recover. Stanford covered the 2,000-meter course with a time of 5:58.48 to OSU's 6:07.63.
In the JV8 race, the Beavers trailed early before making a late push in the final 500 meters to close the gap to within five seconds. Stanford won the match-up with a time of 6:10.74.
Saturday's race concludes the regular season for the Beavers, who return to competition at Pac-12 Championships at Lake Natoma in California next Sunday, May 13.
