Beavers Edged To End Series In Tucson
April 08, 2018 | Baseball
TUCSON, Ariz. – Andy Armstrong doubled twice and he, Steven Kwan and Cadyn Grenier all tallied two hits to pace fourth-ranked Oregon State but the Beavers dropped a 6-5 decision to Arizona Sunday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field.
Â
Arizona (19-11 overall, 4-5 Pac-12 Conference) scored three in the eighth and won the game in the ninth via a single by Alfonso Rivas with the bases loaded and one down.
Â
Armstrong doubled home a run in the fifth, chopping a pitch over the third-base bag. That enabled Preston Jones to score from second. Armstrong then scored when Grenier, two batters later, reached on a safety squeeze. An errant throw from first baseman Alfonso Rivas allowed the run to score.
Â
The Beavers (24-6, 7-5) tacked on to the scored via a Grenier fielder's choice; Arizona's second error of the game allowed Armstrong to score from second. He had posted his second double of the game to get into scoring position.
Â
Oregon State's five consecutive runs were snapped with a three-run eighth by Arizona. The Wildcats scored via a wild pitch, single and groundout to Cadyn Grenier at short. Jake Mulholland struck out Blake Paugh to end the inning.
Â
Grant Gambrell started for the Beavers and finished the afternoon at five innings of work. The sophomore gave up a two-run home run to Nicholas Quintana in the first, but recovered to limit the Wildcats to three hits and two runs with four walks and four strikeouts.
Â
Gambrell, however, did not figure in the decision after Arizona's three runs in the eighth.
Â
Arizona used seven pitchers in the game. Zach Stone started and scattered two hits and two runs in three innings. He did not figure in the decision. The win went to Tyler Megill, who improved to 1-2 after holding Oregon State scoreless over 1 2/3 innings.
Â
Mulholland was charged with the loss, dropping to 1-1.
