Oregon State Sweeps Shortened Series
April 14, 2018 | Baseball
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Oregon State baseball team held on to a sizeable lead over Missouri State from Friday's suspended game to defeat the 19th-ranked Bears, 10-2, Saturday at Hammons Field.
Due to low temperatures in the Springfield area, game three of the series – originally scheduled for Saturday night - was cancelled.
The Beavers jumped out to a 10-1 lead Friday before rain and thunderstorms deluged the Springfield area, forcing the game's suspension in the second inning. Once play resumed Saturday, neither team was able to create much offense. A fifth-inning double by Missouri State's Jeremy Eierman produced the only run on the second day of action.
Grant Gambrell started on the mound to open Saturday – it was a relief appearance – and was sharp in 5 1/3 innings against the Bears. He allowed three hits and a run while striking out eight.
The sophomore picked up the win and is now 4-1 on the year.
The Beavers (26-6 overall), ranked as high as seventh nationally, did all of their damage on Friday over the first two innings. Adley Rutschman opened the game's scoring with a solo home run in the first. That was followed shortly by Tyler Malone, whose two-run blast was his second of the weekend, putting OSU up 3-0 before Missouri State (22-10) came to bat.
Steven Kwan, Cadyn Grenier and Trevor Larnach all drove in runs to make it 6-0 in the second, then watched as Michael Gretler drove a liner off the pole in left for a grand slam, sending the Beavers to the 10-0 lead.
Rutschman and Malone both tallied two hits to lead the Beavers offensively. In addition to the long ball, Malone doubled in the ninth and Rutschman singled in the second.
Bryce Fehmel started for the Beavers and worked 1 2/3 innings on Friday before the postponement. He allowed three hits and a run with a strikeout but did not figure in the decision despite the fact he left the game with an 11-1 lead.
Missouri State starter Ty Buckner took the loss after allowing seven hits and 10 runs on Friday. He dropped to 3-3 on the year.
