Beavers Split on Day One of San Diego Classic
March 02, 2018 | Softball
SAN DIEGO – The No. RV/RV Oregon State University softball program split a pair of games on day one of the San Diego Classic at the USD Softball Complex and SDSU Softball Stadium on Friday.
The Beavers won a 1-0 extra-innings decision over Colorado State (8-2), before falling to No. 21/20 Minnesota (11-4) in the afternoon 4-1.
Oregon State holds an 11-7 overall record in 2018.
GAME ONE vs COLORADO STATE
Junior Meehra Nelson got the nod to begin the San Diego Classic, where she threw a complete game shutout against the Rams of Colorado State. Meehra (7-3) recorded 10 strikeouts, while the Beavers defense made play after play securing the complete game shutout.
It was a pitching battle right up until the end.
The lone run of the game came in extra innings in the top of the eighth. Freshman Chance Burden began the top of the eighth on second base. With two down, Shelby Weeks singled to left field, but a fielding error allowed Burden to cross home, plating the eventual game-winning run.
Colorado State went three up and three down in the bottom half of the eights inning thanks to Nelson's efforts; fly out, strike out, and a pop up.
The Rams had runners in scoring position in the first and third innings, but failed to take advantage.
Weeks had the only stolen base of the game, her fourth of the season.
Nelson improved to 7-3 on the season, with a 1.93 ERA. She leads all Beavers' pitchers with 52 strikeouts.
GAME TWO vs NO. 21/20 MINNESOTA
In its second game of the day, Oregon State fell behind early and couldn't string together enough hits to make a comeback. Minnesota had a strong start in the first inning, putting up three runs, one of which was unearned.
With runners on second and third the Gophers got a two-run RBI single, and followed that up with an unearned run off a fielding error from Burden. Minnesota maintained runners in scoring position, but back-to-back putouts from shortstop McKenna Arriola ended the frame.
The Gophers added to their lead in the second inning when yet another fielding error allowed Minnesota's Partain to reach safely. A couple batters later, a single through the right side brought the baserunner around for the fourth run of the game, unearned.
The Beavers got on the board when the bats came alive in the fourth inning. Weeks started the inning off with a hard hit double to right field that was misplayed by Maddie Houlihan. Two batters later, after Weeks had advanced to third on a fielders' choice putout, pitcher Mariah Mazon blasted one to left center one hopping the wall for an RBI double.
The Beavers attempted comeback was derailed in the sixth inning with the bases loaded. Minnesota made a heads up defensive play, grabbing the force out at home after Camryn Ybarra's fielder's choice hit to the shortstop.
Oregon State couldn't manage anything in the seventh, ending the game at a 4-1 score line.
