Beavers Push Win Streak to Six
March 10, 2018 | Softball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The No. RV Oregon State University softball team extended its win streak to six games with a two-game sweep on the second day of the CSUN Tournament hosted by California State University Northridge at Matador Stadium.
The Beavers blanked Seattle University (13-12) for the second-straight game, 9-0, before taking down No. RV Texas Tech (13-8), 4-2.
Oregon State now sits at 17-8 overall during the 2018 season.
GAME ONE vs SEATTLE
The Beavers showed plenty of power at the plate in the first game on day two at the CSUN Tournament. OSU rattled off nine hits, including three homeruns en route to a 9-0 shutout win over Seattle.
The Beavers scored in three consecutive innings beginning with the second. Alysha Everett started things off with a single to center field; consecutive walks and a fielder's choice out allowed Everett to cross home plate.
With the bases loaded, Kayleen Shafer stepped in the box hitting a sacrifice fly out to right field scoring Hope Brandner. A hard hit infield RBI single for Michelle Sass brought Missy Nunes home for a 3-0 lead after the top half of the second inning.
Brandner hit her first of two home runs in the third inning. With Everett sitting on first after a single, Brandner drove one deep over the center field wall for a two-run swing in favor of the Beavers.
Not to be outdone, Shelby Weeks launched a two RBI shot over the right field wall for her third homer of the season in the fourth inning.
Seattle was close to breaking the shutout in the sixth inning with Oregon State forcing the Redhawks to leave three base runners stranded.
No runs scored until the seventh when Brandner hit her team-leading seventh homerun of the year, a two-run blast to left field.
Mariah Mazon tossed a complete game shutout earning her seventh win of the season (7-4). Mazon gave up only four hits while fanning four.
GAME TWO vs TEXAS TECH
The Beavers had the bats going once again in the second game of the day, but managed only four runs off of nine hits. OSU gained the lead in the second inning and never relinquished it.
The first run of the game came in the bottom of the second inning when Camryn Ybarra drove an RBI double to left field. Ybarra was one of four Beavers to hit a double in the game.
Oregon State followed that up with a two-run fourth inning giving the Beavers a three-run lead, their largest of the game. Once again it was Ybarra with an RBI, this time a single up the middle scoring Nunes who reached on a double. McKenna Arriola followed with an RBI double to center scoring Ybarra.
The Red Raiders cut into the Beavers' lead in the fifth inning, ending the shutout hopes of Meehra Nelson. Oregon State's lone error of the game allowed the inning to extend, and eventually an RBI single before it was out.
A bases loaded walk gave Oregon State a 4-1 lead, but Texas Tech scored one more in the sixth on a wild pitch giving the final score of 4-2.
Nelson picked up her ninth win of the season (9-4), behind 6.0 innings pitched with two strikeouts. Mariah Mazon came in to pitch the seventh, picking up her third save of the year while striking out two-of-three batters faced.
