
Madrigal Named To Golden Spikes Watch List

Madrigal is a preseason All-American by multiple publications
DURHAM, N.C. – Oregon State junior infielder Nick Madrigal is one of 55 players on the initial watch list for the 2018 Golden Spikes Award, USA Baseball announced on Friday.

The award is given annually to the nation's top amateur player, and the 41st recipient of the prestigious honor will be announced on June 28. A midseason watch list will be released in April, with semifinalists revealed May 21. Finalists will then be announced June 6.

Madrigal is a unanimous preseason All-American entering the season.

Madrigal, a native of Elk Grove, is coming off a season where he batted .380 with 22 doubles, four home runs, 40 runs batted in and 16 stolen bases. He finished the 2017 season as a unanimous All-American, was named the Pac-12 Conference's Player and Defensive Player of the Year and also earned the program's first-ever collegiate Golden Glove Award. A sociology major, he was also named a Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention selection.

He is the 15th Oregon State player to be named to the Golden Spikes Award watch list since 2008, and the 12th since 2012.

He is one of six players from the Pac-12 Conference on the 2018 watch list.
