Oregon State Bested by No. 6/12 Auburn
February 24, 2018 | Softball
Beavers battle but ultimately drop contest 10-7 to Tigers
"Defensively we didn't get it done," said head coach Laura Berg. "We did what we needed to do offensively and in the circle to beat Auburn, but we're not going to beat top 25 teams while committing five errors.
"We just have to play catch."
The mistakes piled up early as Victoria Draper reached on an infield single to short in the top of the first, but a throwing error sent her to second and she eventually scored on a wild pitch to give Auburn (17-1) an early 1-0 lead.
Oregon State (9-6) knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom half of the frame after freshman Missy Nunes (Livermore, Calif.) found a gap through the left side of the infield to cap junior Jessica Garcia (Hughson, Calif.) from second.
The Tigers added two more in the second and one in the third, eventually tallying a run in every inning except the seventh, while Oregon State evened the count once again at 4-4 in the bottom of the third behind a pair of jacks from the senior combo of McKenna Arriola (West Hills, Calif.) and Alysha Everett (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.).
Arriola led the inning off with a solo smash to the opposite field, while Everett showcased her pull power with a two-run blast to right to bring in Garcia.
Auburn added two more in the fourth, capitalizing on the fourth Beaver error of the day, while freshman Chance Burden (Huntington Beach, Calif.) sent a bloop single down the right field line to plate Michelle Sass (St. Helens, Ore.) for a 6-5 deficit going into the fifth.
The Tigers got two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings to set their total at 10, while an RBI single from Arriola in the sixth that scored junior Kayleen Shafer (Mission Viejo, Calif.) and the third home run of the year from freshman Hope Brandner (Vacaville, Calif.) in the seventh capped OSU's total at seven for the day.
Sophomore Nerissa Eason (Grass Valley, Calif.) took the no-decision after getting the start in the circle, going for two innings before getting the hook for junior Meehra Nelson (Simi Valley, Calif.) who fell to 6-3 on the year. Eason would reenter the circle with one out in the sixth to see the Beavers through the remainder of the game.
Oregon State will wrap up the 2018 Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic with a game against LIU Brooklyn on Sunday, February 25, at 9 a.m. PT. The contest will broadcast live on FloSoftball.com.
