Oregon State records second shutout of Purple and Gold Challenge
BATON ROUGE, La. – The No. RV/RV Oregon State University softball program relied on junior Meehra Nelson (Simi Valley, Calif.) and freshman Mariah Mazon (Tulare, Calif.) once again on Saturday at Tiger Park to claim a 2-0 decision over Louisiana Tech to open day two of the Purple and Gold Challenge.
"I know it's been a long couple of days for the kids," said head coach Laura Berg, "but they're finding ways to win and that's the important part.
"I'm proud of Meehra and I'm proud of Mariah coming out and taking care of business."
Nelson (5-0) went 5.1 innings of three-hit ball, striking out two for the Beavers (7-2), while Mazon earned her second save in 1.2 innings of work to knockout the Bulldogs (4-7).
All of the action came in the first inning as freshman Hope Brandner (Vacaville, Calif.) sent a sacrifice fly to right field to plate junior Shelby Weeks (Tracy, Calif.) for the first run, while a two-out, bases-loaded single from junior Kayleen Shafer (Mission Viejo, Calif.) brought in freshman Missy Nunes (Livermore, Calif.) for the second run.
Nelson settled in from there, allowing only one hit from LA Tech in the second, fourth and fifth innings, and only one Bulldog runner made it as far as third during her time in the circle.
The Simi Valley, Calif., native retired four of the six leadoff batters she faced and induced a leadoff groundout in the top of the sixth before Mazon came in for relief.
Mazon fielded the grounder to initiate the double play to end the sixth and sat down LA Tech in order in the top of the seventh to secure the victory.
The Beavers will face No. 7/7 LSU to wrap up day two of the Purple and Gold Challenge starting at 5:30 p.m. PT at Tiger Park.
