Nunes smashes third home run of her career; Weeks adds first of season

LAFAYETTE, La. – The No. RV/RV Oregon State University softball program took on No. 19/16 Louisiana in a non-conference matchup on Thursday and fell 9-4 in the nightcap at Lamson Park.

The Beavers (4-2) showcased their power with a pair of long shots but the Ragin' Cajuns (6-0) plated eight runs in the span of three innings to take the decision.

Freshman Missy Nunes (Livermore, Calif.) kept her torrid pace at the plate with a one-run liner that sailed over the center field wall in the top of the second to open the scoring. Five of Nunes' six hits in 2018 have gone for extra bases, three of which went over the wall.

Louisiana responded in the second with a trio of runs, plating a run each on a Kourtney Gremillion single, a Brittany Rodriguez sacrifice bunt and an Alissa Dalton single.

The Ragin' Cajuns added two more in the bottom of the third, capitalizing on a Beaver miscue and a bunt single from Gremillion in the process, before bringing their total to eight runs with three more in the fourth on a single from Gremillion's sister Kara and a two-run shot from Lexie Comeaux.

Junior Shelby Weeks (Tracy, Calif.) cut into Louisiana's lead in the top of the fifth with a display of opposite-field power, sending a three-run jack to left center to set the score at 8-4.

Oregon State loaded the bases with two outs after that point, but a timely pitching change from the Ragin' Cajuns made all the difference as Kylee Jo Trahan relieved Summer Ellyson of her duties and tallied the crucial strikeout to end the threat.

Louisiana added the final run in the bottom of the sixth to cap the scoring. Freshman Mariah Mazon (Tulare, Calif.) (1-2) took the loss in the circle with a pair of punchouts in 3.2 innings pitched.

The Beavers will take on Central Arkansas on Friday at 9:30 a.m. CT (7:30 a.m. PT) at Tiger Park in Baton Rouge, La., to kick off the Purple and Gold Challenge.
