Oregon State Drops Dual to South Dakota State; Bresser Picks up 100th Win

CORVALLIS – The Oregon State wrestling team suffered its first dual loss of the season inside of Gill Coliseum on Sunday afternoon to South Dakota State University.
The Beavers (1-1, 1-0 Pac-12) were defeated by the visiting Jackrabbits (1-3, 0-1 Big 12) by a final score of 19-17.
Redshirt senior Ronnie Bresser (10-1) became the 26th wrestler in Oregon State history to achieve 100 career victories on Sunday afternoon. Ranked No. 3 in the nation, Bresser scored a takedown in the first three seconds of the match, and the Klamath Falls, Ore. native finished Gregory Coapstick (SDSU) with a pin in 2-minutes, 9-seconds.
Leading the team score 6-0, Kegan Calkins (4-5) kept the ball rolling for the Beavers at 133 pounds. Calkins led 2-0 after the first period using a four-point near fall in the second frame building up a sizeable lead. Calkins won by major decision over Spencer Huber (SDSU), 9-0 putting the Beavers up 10-0 in the team race.
The Beavers nearly had another pin at 141 pounds, but couldn't get the call as the opposition fought through a cradle for over a minute. Grant Willits (8-4) put Oregon State ahead in the team score 14-0 with a major decision in the third bout of the afternoon. G. Willits surrendered the first takedown, but rallied to score 10 straight points en route to a 10-2 major decision over Aric Williams (SDSU).
Oregon State dropped three straight at the 149, 157 and 165 pound weight classes. Zach Evans (5-3) lost by decision to No. 18 Henry Pohlmeyer (SDSU), 8-4. No. 20 Hunter Willits (14-5) dropped a 3-2 decision to Colten Carlson (SDSU), while Aaron Olmos (6-6) couldn't complete the comeback falling by decision to Logan Peterson (SDSU), 9-7.
The last win of the afternoon came at 174 pounds for OSU. Colt Doyle (7-5) jumped out to a quick 2-0 start racking up over two minutes of ride time in the first frame. Doyle tried to get the bonus point win late in the match, but came away with a decision victory over Kelby Hawkins (SDSU), 8-2.
Oregon State led 17-9 with three bouts remaining; South Dakota State claimed victories at 184 pounds, 197 pounds and Heavyweight securing the team win for the visitors. Zach Carlson (SDSU) defeated Myles Terry (7-6) by decision 8-3; Martin Mueller Jr. (SDSU) beat Bob Coleman (9-4) by major decision, 15-5; and Blake Wolters (SDSU) won by decision over Jamarcus Grant (12-6).
