Beavers Wrap Up 2018 at North Dakota State and Reno Tournament of Champions
December 20, 2018 | Wrestling
FARGO, N.D. – The Oregon State wrestling team wrapped up a busy day as the team saw action at the Reno Tournament of Champions and a dual with No. 20 North Dakota State.
The Beavers (1-2, 1-0 Pac-12) fell to the Bison (5-1, 2-1 Big 12) by a final score of 31-13.
The night started off at the 149-pound weight class featuring Zach Evans. Evans battled hard throughout the match, but Jaden Van Maanen (NDSU) proved to be too much as he ended with a third-period fall. The home team led 6-0 after the first bout.
The Beavers got their first points of the match at 157 pounds thanks to sophomore Hunter Willits. The No. 17-ranked wrestler at his weight class controlled the majority of the match after giving up an early takedown. The Pueblo, Colo. native tried to secure the major decision, but ran out of time winning by decision 10-4.
Oregon State trailed 6-3 after the first two bouts.
OSU suffered defeats at the next three weight classes; 165, 174 and 184 pounds. Aaron Olmos (165) fell behind early and couldn't regain momentum. The redshirt freshmen was pinned by No. 17 Andrew Fogarty (NDSU) and the Bison led the team score 12-3.
The Beavers found themselves in two close matches at 174 and 184, but couldn't come out on top. Colt Doyle trailed by one point in the third period before falling by decision 11-7. Sophomore Myles Terry scored a quick first period takedown against Michael Otomo (NDSU), but the lead was too much to overcome. Otomo beat Terry by a 10-6 decision in the final match before the midway break.
North Dakota State led Oregon State 18-3 after the first five bouts.
After the midway intermission the dual meet resumed at 197 pounds. Bob Coleman got the start for the third straight dual. Cordell Eaton (NDSU) scored the first points of the match while Coleman tried to battle, but the Hermiston, Ore. native lost by major decision 12-3.
Oregon State suffered another defeat at heavyweight featuring Jamarcus Grant against Brandon Metz. Grant surrendered the first six points of his match, falling by major decision, 15-6.
The marquee match of the night came at 125 pounds featuring two Top-10 ranked wrestlers in No. 3 Ronnie Bresser and No. 8 Brent Fleetwood. The pair wrestled a scoreless first period that saw no real danger from either side. Bresser elected for bottom start in the second period escaping quickly for a 1-0 lead. Â Bresser then got an under hook and ran it over putting Fleetwood on his back for the pin in 3:43. Oregon State trailed 26-9 with two bouts left.
133 pounds featured another ranked wrestler from NDSU in No. 18 Cam Sykora against redshirt senior Kegan Calkins. Calkins struck first with a takedown and a 2-0 lead in the first minute of the match. He lost by technical fall, 19-3.
In the final bout of the evening it was another win for the Beavers. Grant Willits blanked Sawyer Degen controlling the entire match for a 13-0 major decision.
The Bison won by a final score of 31-13.
Reno Tournament of Champions
Oregon State sent 15 wrestlers to the Reno Tournament of Champions, six attached and nine unattached.
Jackson McKinney, who wrestled unattached, was the only one to reach the championship quarterfinals. McKinney dropped his quarterfinal match, and his subsequent consolation match ending his day.Â
Early losses for Devan Turner, 133 pounds, and Brandon Kaylor, 125 pounds, put them into the consolation bracket. Both Turner and Kaylor fought their way through to the consolation semifinals where they both suffered defeats.
