Bresser Takes Silver at Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational

LAS VEGAS – The Oregon State wrestling team wrapped up a long and busy weekend at the 37th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
The Beavers had two placers at this year's iteration of the event; No. 3 Ronnie Bresser and No. 19 Hunter Willits. Oregon State finished in 19th place with 44 team points after placing 31st in Vegas a season ago. Â
125 Pounds
The lone Beaver in the championship side of the bracket was senior 125-pounder Bresser. The No. 3-ranked wrestler in his weight class squared up with the No. 5-ranked S. Russell from Minnesota in the semifinals to begin the day. It was a tight match all the way through that saw Bresser win by decision, 2-1.
In the finals, it was a battle of two highly ranked wrestlers that needed extra time to decide the winner. Bresser got the first takedown of the math, but Rivera responded with an escape and takedown of his own for a 3-2 lead in the third period. Bresser got his escape forcing the match to sudden victory, where it was No. 2-ranked Rivera who came out of a lengthy scramble on top.
The second place finish for Bresser was the highest placing at the Cliff Keen in his career. He currently sits at 98 career wins at Oregon State.
157 Pounds
Sophomore 157-pounder Hunter Willits made it to the second day of the Cliff Keen Invitational for the first time in his career, and won his opening match on Saturday. Willits faced Air Force's A. Mossing in the second consolation of eight round winning by major decision, 14-6.
In the consolation round of four it was a battle of two ranked opponents at No. 19 Willits faced No. 7 K. Hayes from Ohio State. It was a close match until the third period, but the Pueblo, Colo. native fell by major decision, 12-3 dropping him to the 7th place match.
Willits squared off with Illinois's E Barone in for the 7th place medal in his final match of the tournament. Willits battled but fell by decision 4-0 taking home his first placing at the Cliff Keen Invitational in 8th place.
