Two Beavers Advance to Day Two at Cliff Keen Invitational

LAS VEGAS – The Oregon State wrestling team wrapped up the first day of competition in Las Vegas at the 37th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational late Friday night.
Two wrestlers for Oregon State advanced to the second day of competition. No. 3 125-pounder Ronnie Bresser, and No. 19 157-pounder Hunter Willits. OSU currently sits in 19th out of 42 teams with 32.5 team points.
The second day of competition begins at 9 a.m. with the consolation bracket followed by the championship semifinals.
125 Pounds
No. 3-Ranked Bresser was back in action after sitting out the Navy Classic two weeks ago. Bresser started the day off in the round of 32 with a controlled 8-3 decision over C. Smith of Missouri.
The Klamath Falls native found his stride in the round of 16 pinning Hofstra's D. Ryder in just 1-minute, 2-seconds punching his way into the quarterfinals.
In the quarterfinals, Bresser matched with No. 14 D. Schroder of Purdue. It was all Bresser as he started with a quick takedown and four-point near fall in the first 30-seconds of the match. He went on to win by major decision, 12-2. Bresser will face No. 5 Sean Russell of Minnesota tomorrow in the Semifinals.
133 Pounds
Kegan Calkins was named the starter at 133 pounds earlier this week and wasted no time on the first day in Las Vegas. Calkins used a major decision over T. Olson of Hofstra in the round of 32, 10-2. The redshirt senior drew Ohio State's No. 5-ranked L. Pletcher in the round of 16, where he lost by major decision.
Calkins once again faced a ranked opponent in the Consolation Round of 16 in Wyoming's No. 11 Montorie Bridges. Â Calkins battled hard throughout the match but fell by decision 8-3 ending his tournament run.
141 Pounds
Grant Willits made his first appearance at the Cliff Keen Invitational on Friday, drawing No. 3 J. Eierman of Missouri in the round of 32. Willits lost to Eierman by a third period pin.
In the consolation bracket Willits turned things around with two decisions over P. Lipari (Rutgers) and D. Marten (Central Michigan). Willits defeated Lipari 7-6, while earning a 3-2 win over Marten.
His run in Vegas came to an end in the second consolation round of 16; Willits dropped a 2-0 decision to J. Mutchnik from American.
149 Pounds
Josh Reyes made the trip to Las Vegas, but the senior was pulled out of the tournament before seeing any action with an injury.
157 Pounds
No. 19 Hunter Willits entered the weekend coming off a second place finish at the Navy Classic two weeks ago. Willits began the day in the round of 64 winning by decision over Oklahoma's J.Thomas, 6-4. Â
In the round of 32 it was Willits again prevailing by decision. This time over J. Brindley of Cornell, 8-4. Willits defeated Michigan's L. Van Anrooy by decision, 4-2, punching his ticket to the Quarterfinals.
Heading into the quarterfinals it was Willits who was the underdog to Northwestern's No. 5-ranked R. Deakin. Willits was the first to strike picking up a takedown after a lengthy scramble, but it was Deakin who prevailed by major decision.
Willits will face A. Mossing of Air Force in his first match on Saturday morning.
165 Pounds
In the 165-pound weight class it was redshirt freshman Aaron Olmos making his first start at the Cliff Keen Invitational for the Beavers. Â Olmos dropped his opening match in the round of 32 to No. 15 D. Romero of Utah Valley by major decision, 12-4.
Olmos turned things around in the consolation bracket using a 6-4 decision over A. Wokasch from American to stay alive. In the second Consolation round of 16, Olmos was eliminated from the tournament by a 12-3 major decision to J. Wright of Fresno State.
174 Pounds
Another new face made his first appearance in Las Vegas for Oregon State at 174 pounds in Colt Doyle. The San Diego, Calif. native drew a ranked opponent in the round of 32 losing by major decision.
In the consolation bracket Doyle was pitted against Harvard's K. Bierdumpfel in the round of 16 where he advanced with a 10-6 decision. Doyle kept at his winning ways in the second round of 16 with a 6-4 decision over Pittsburgh's G. Harvy Jr. which advanced him to the evening session.
The first match of the evening session pitted Doyle against No. 13 D. Lydy from Purdue. Doyle trailed by one in the final minute he got a deep shot off, but couldn't finish it losing by decision, 5-2.
184 Pounds
Myles Terry earned the start this week for the Beavers, but a touch draw to start the tournament forced Terry into the consolation bracket early. Terry lost by technical fall to No. 5 Z. Zavatsky of Virginia Tech in the round of 64. Terry matched up against Pac-12 Conference opponent D. Ducharme of CSU Bakersfield and built up a big lead early, but fell by decision, 13-10.
197 Pounds
No. 9 Corey Griego came into Vegas after an early exit from the Navy Classic. The redshirt senior opened the day with a pin over D. Allen of Highline CC taking just 1-minute, 37-seconds to do so.
If the round of 32 the Apple Valley, Calif. native got caught by W. Koelling of Missouri and pinned in the first period. In the consolation round of 16 Griego lost a 4-0 decision to S. Root of The Citadel, 4-0.
285 Pounds
Jamarcus Grant had a tough start to his day with a sudden victory loss. Grant was working his way to the center of the ring when he was hit for a second stall call awarding the winning point to the opposition.
Grant turned it around in his opening consolation bracket match with a first period pin over E. Barger of Highline. He earned his fastest pin of the season so far with a 2-minute fall.
In the Consolation round of 16, Grant held a lead late over J. Aven from Purdue, and turned a decision into a fall in the final seconds of regulation. Grant advanced to the evening session on Friday after his opponent medically forfeited in the second Round of 16.
The fifth match of the day for Grant came in the evening session in the consolation Round of 16 against Northern Iowa's C. Isley. The match went the distance and some as the opposition won by decision in the second tiebreaker period, 2-1.
