Oregon State hits 15 3-pointers in 89-56 win
CORVALLIS – A 3-point barrage lifted the No. 8 Oregon State women's basketball team to an 89-56 win over Saint Mary's Saturday evening at Gill Coliseum.
"Saint Mary's is a team that is gritty and tough, and I knew coming in that this game was going to take a great effort," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "The way they play is not easy to defend, and we knew this was going to be a good test for us. Overall I was extremely pleased with our effort and our attention to detail. When our team starts to roll, we have so many weapons and we saw that tonight. This was the perfect test at the perfect time, and I'm really proud of the overall effort by our team."
The Beavers finished 15-for-29 from beyond the arc, three 3-pointers shy of the program record for triples in a game.
Sophomore guard Destiny Slocum finished with 22 points on 9-for-15 shooting. Junior Mikayla Pivec filled the stat-sheet yet again, going for 19 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and two steals. Sophomore Aleah Goodman hit four 3-pointers to finish with 12 points.
Senior Joanna Grymek tallied seven points and seven rebounds, while fellow senior Katie McWilliams scored nine points on 3-for-3 shooting from 3-point range.
As a team, the Beavers shot 48.5 percent from the floor and held Saint Mary's to 33.9 percent shooting. Oregon State also held a 50-31 advantage in rebounds and a 21-2 edge in second-chance points.
Oregon State exploded out of the gate, as Slocum scored double-figures within the first four minutes on the way to a 16-6 Beaver lead at the first media timeout. OSU continued to roll for the remainder of the opening frame, as Pivec hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the first quarter with the Beavers up 30-12.
Saint Mary's came back with seven unanswered points in the second period, but the Beavers answered back to get the lead back to 20. Oregon State headed to the locker room up 48-26.
Goodman and Slocum finished the first half with 12 point apiece.
The Beavers extended the lead to 27 early in the second half, before the Gaels used a 7-0 run to get it back to 20. Oregon State kept the Gaels at bay from there to take the win by 33.
Oregon State will hit the road for the first time this week, when it heads north to take part in the Vancouver Showcase. The Beavers will open the event Thursday when they take on Western Kentucky in their first of three games in Vancouver.
