October 03, 2018 | Softball
Eric Leyba joins Oregon State staff for the 2018-19 season.
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Going into her seventh year as head coach, Laura Berg announced the addition of Eric Leyba to her staff for the upcoming 2018-19 season.
Â
"Having Eric here is really going to help us out," said Berg. "He has a lot of years of experience playing and watching men's fast pitch. He brings some Pac-12 experience with him after coaching at the University of Oregon when I played, so he knows what kind of athletes we recruit in the Pac-12 and this can only benefit us.
Â
He has a really smooth approach to the game and to the players. A lot of the athletes have been absorbing every word he says. It is really fun and exciting to watch this interaction. He throws incredible batting practice, and the girls are ecstatic about that."
Â
Leyba comes to Oregon State after previously working with the Northwest Bullets. He was also the head coach at Churchill High School for the past 15 years.
Â
"I am overwhelmed and excited to be joining the staff," said Leyba. "I have been around them while working camps. To finally be on staff and work alongside Coach Berg and Coach Green is amazing. In my opinion, Berg is the best female player to ever play the game. To get to work and learn from her is fantastic and a dream come true."
Â
A graduate from New Mexico State, Leyba will bring Division I coaching experience to the staff after stints with New Mexico State from 1992-97 and the University of Oregon from 1997-99.
Â
"I love the blue collar-ness of OSU," Leyba continue. "I went to a state school, so I appreciate the family atmosphere in the athletic department. Oregon State is a great university that has great people around it. You couldn't ask for a better situation."
Â
Leyba will be responsible for the hitters and infielders at OSU and began his duties at the start of the fall season.
Â
"The team has some great veterans coming back," stated Leyba. "I love the dynamic of the team and the environment that is coming together and meshing so far through the fall season."
Â
A Deming, New Mexico native, Leyba is joined by his wife of 19 years, Heidi. The couple have one daughter, Tori and a son, Niko.
