October 19, 2018 | Women's Volleyball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team came out fired up taking the opening set against No. 2 Stanford but were outlasted by the Cardinal 3-1 Friday night.
With the loss, the Beavers fell to 10-11 and 0-9 in Pac-12 play, while the Cardinal improved to 17-1, 9-0. Set scores were 26-24, 10-25, 18-25 and 23-25.
Amy Underdown led the Beavers' offense with 15 kills, while Grace Massey led the back row defense with 21 digs. Lindsey Schell led the way at the net with six blocks.
"We played with a level of intensity that has been absent for quite some time," head coach Mark Barnard said. "Our game plan was to be aggressive and go down swinging and we did. We served tough, and sure we made mistakes, but we also got Stanford out of system. I just believed that was how we needed to play them and it was the best we've played recently."
The Beavers were clicking early in the match taking a 5-2 lead in the opening stanza before the Cardinal came storming back to seize the lead 13-9. OSU quickly closed the gap and tied the score at 14-14. The teams traded sideouts resulting seven ties before Stanford gained the lead at 22-20. Following an Oregon State timeout, a service error by the Cardinal, followed by an ace by Grace Massey and kill by Underdown gave the Beavers the lead at 23-22 forcing Stanford to call for its own timeout. The Cardinal answered with a kill and a block to gain set point at 24-23. But the Beavers weren't done. Haylie Bennett recorded a kill to tie the game. Then Maddy Gravley knocked down a block and Underdown finished the set with her fifth kill of the set to give the Beavers the set, 26-24.
The second set was a whole new ballgame as the momentum shifted and Stanford reeled off six straight point to start the set. OSU struggled throughout the set as the Cardinal took the set, 25-10, to tie the match.
The Beavers regained their feet in the third set holding tough through the midpoint with the score tied at 14-14. A three-point run by Stanford made it 17-14 and the Beavers could never regain the lead. Three kills by Lindsey Schell kept it close but the Cardinal went on to score the final five points of the set to win it, 25-18, and take a two sets to one lead.
Oregon State refused to rollover for the defending national champions taking a 6-3 lead as Bennett, Underdown and Maddie Goings each recorded kills in the early going. However, Stanford scored four in a row, including three straight blocks to take the lead 7-6. The Beavers went on a 4-0 run behind a pair of Goings kills and an ace by Maddie Sheehan to go up 11-8. Once again, the Cardinal tied the score at 16-16 after which came four more ties before OSU was able to score on back-to-back kills by Underdown and Goings to make it 22-20. Following a Stanford timeout, the Cardinal answered with consecutive kills to tie the score. Stanford went on to tally the last three points to win the set 25-23.
Game Notes: Three Beavers reached double figures in kills with Amy Underdown leading the team with 15. Maddie Goings added 12 kills while Haylie Bennett recorded 10 … Underdown registered her team-leading ninth double-double of the year with 15 kills and 10 digs while Maddie Sheehan collected sixth of the season with 30 assists and 11 digs … Grace Massey led the squad with 21 digs … Lindsey Schell posted a team-leading six blocks.
