Beavers Set to Open Indoor Season at UW Indoor Preview
January 11, 2018 | Women's Track & Field
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State track & field team opens the 2018 indoor season this Saturday at the UW Indoor Preview, hosted by the University of Washington at the Dempsey Indoor Center.
"Opening this early in the season puts us in a good spot," began first year head coach Louie Quintana. "The level of expectation is to go in there and compete hard and keep a level head, no matter the result we are building for the remainder of the season."
The Saturday only event is a part of the Beavers' three regular season indoor events that culminate with the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships on Feb. 23-24, also at the Dempsey Indoor Center.
Of the Beavers travelling to Seattle, eight bring experience from the indoor season in 2017. Redshirt junior Juliana Mount returns after setting two all-time indoor records last season in the 3000-meters and the 4,000-meter distance medley. Redshirt junior Gwyneth McMorris was also a member of the record-setting relay team.
In total, five all-time records were broken and set during the 2017 indoor season. Sophomore pole vaulter Gillette Field contributed with a 12-foot 6.25-inch clear at the 2017 MPSF Championships.
"Last season's success is a great springboard, there has been a lot of great work done and the women are eager," said Quintana.
Coach Quintana is looking for some natural leaders to appear.
"Right now it is wide open," began Quintana. "Losing those sprinters from last year creates a hole, but we have some athletes that will naturally gravitate towards those lead roles for our sprint group."
First-time competitors for the Beavers this weekend are Claire Corbitt (60 hurdles), Brigette Takeuchi (3,000), Alissa Melvin (long jump, triple jump), Ann Wingeleth, a transfer from Utah (long jump, high jump), Marin Zaccheo (60), Ryleigh Crenshaw (pole vault), Alexa Harris (high jump), Malika Washington (400), and Tory Edwards, a transfer from Rhode Island (pole vault).
Current Beavers Colette Richter (3,000) and Dakota Steen (400) are seeing their first indoor action this weekend as well.
Oregon State will be competing against Gonzaga, Hawaii, Oregon, Seattle, Stanford and Washington with dual meet scoring.
