Tibbits Leads Beavers In His Collegiate Debut
September 25, 2017 | Men's Golf
ERIE, Colo. – Spencer Tibbits had a great start to his college career, as he led the Oregon State men's golf team on the opening day of the Mark Simpson Invitational.
Â
Tibbits, a freshman from Vancouver, Wash., shot a bogey-free 4-under 68 in his first collegiate round and followed that with an even-par 72 in the afternoon to put him in a tie for ninth place with a 4-under 140.
Â
The Beavers sit in fifth place in the 20-team field with a 5-under 285-286--571 at the par-72, 7,676-yard Colorado National Golf Club.
Â
Host Colorado leads the two-day, 54-hole tournament with a 15-under 561. Wyoming is second with a 13-under 563, Utah is third with an 11-under 565 and Air Force is fourth, and only one shot ahead of Oregon State, with a 5-under 570.
Â
On Tuesday there will be a staggered shotgun format. The top four teams will play in tee times off the first hole beginning at 7:55 a.m. MT (6:55 a.m. PT). The rest of the field will be in a shotgun at 8:15 a.m. MT (7:15 a.m. PT).

"Overall, I thought for our first day of competition this season, we played well," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "The guys were in control and were poised. We didn't putt particularly well as we missed a number of birdie opportunities.
Â
"Collectively, we made some silly mistakes that added up. If we can clean those up and make one or two more putts tomorrow, we will have the opportunity to shoot a low score."
Â
Junior Trevor Yu and sophomore Shawn Lu are both tied for 27th place with an even-par 144, as Yu was steady with a pair of 72's and Lu finished the 36-hole day with 73-71.
Â
Senior Jonas Liebich had a solid afternoon round to move into a tie for 41st place with a 1-over 74-71—145.
Â
Freshman Keaton Gudz also made his Oregon State debut and finished the day with a 2-over 72-74—146 for a tie for 49th place.
Â
Tibbits led the Beavers in par-5 scoring (4.75), Liebich led in par-4 scoring (3.85) and Gudz led in par-3 scoring (2.88). Lu dropped in a team-high seven birdies.
Â
"Spencer was very good in his first round at Oregon State," Reehoorn said. "Not only did he shoot a 68, but he was bogey free, which indicates to me he is hitting the right shot to correct spots and making a few key putts. The bogey free is as big of a deal to me as the 68."
Â
Spencer Painton of Colorado had the round of the day, a 7-under 65, to help him hold the clubhouse lead through 36 holes with a 9-under 135.
