Beavers open regular season on Aug. 18
CORVALLIS – The Oregon State women's soccer team opened practice for the 2017 campaign on Wednesday, as the Beavers held their first training session of the year. With a strong group of returning players and a number of promising newcomers, the team was excited to be back on the field.
"Overall this was a good first day," said head coach Linus Rhode. "I think we're in good physical shape for some pretty intense training. It's day one, and there is still a lot to work on, but I'm really happy with where we're at to start out."
The Beavers enter the season with a group of 12 upperclassmen, including seven seniors. Senior goalkeeper Bella Geist has started 56 games over the course of her collegiate career, posting 12 clean sheets. As she heads into her final collegiate campaign, she hopes that the group of seniors can end their careers on a high note.
"I think the team brought a lot of intensity and hard work today," said Geist. "We have a really good platform to start from, and we're ready to start the season soon."
On the attacking end, Oregon State features the senior duo of Nikki Faris and Emma Jones, both of whom started all 20 games last season. The pair combined for seven goals and 11 assists in 2016, and will look to continue their strong form this season.
In the midfield, Natalie Higgins and Kayla Latham have been mainstays for Oregon State throughout their careers. Higgins tallied 11 points last season on four goals and three assists, while Latham joined her in starting all 20 matches.
The Beavers will continue practice over the coming weeks, as they prepare for their exhibition vs. Trinity Western on Aug. 11. Oregon State will open its 2017 campaign on Aug. 18 when it hosts Kansas State at Lorenz Field.
