All-American becomes second-straight Beaver to win Oregon Sports Award
BEAVERTON, Ore. – For the second-straight year, the Bill Hayward Amateur Athlete of the Year Award has been claimed by an Oregon State women's basketball player, as Sydney Wiese earned the honor at Sunday evening's Oregon Sports Awards.
Fellow Beaver Jamie Weisner earned the Hayward Award last year, marking the first time an OSU women's basketball player had taken the honor since Felicia Ragland won it in 2001. Wiese beat out nominees Kaytianna McMillan of Oregon State gymnastics and Raevyn Rogers of Oregon track and field.
Wiese was unable to attend the awards ceremony due to her commitments with the Los Angeles Sparks, but she submitted an acceptance video, which can be viewed below.
Wiese is one of 14 players in conference history to make the All-Pac-12 Coaches Team four times. The All-American is the Pac-12's career record holder for 3-pointers, and was selected by the Sparks in the first round of the WNBA Draft. Wiese finished her career fifth in Oregon State history in career points, and holds the school record for career assists. She led the Beavers with 15.2 points per game, as is among the top 16 in the nation in 3-point percentage.
A speech communication major, Wiese won the Senior CLASS Award, Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year and was an Academic All-America selection. She has also worked extensively in the community, donating her hair in a special Haircuts for Cancer ceremony, and participating in a Candlelighters for Cancer fishing trip over the summer.
Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck was nominated for the Slats Gill Sportsman of the Year Award, an honor he won in 2016. Incoming freshman Aleah Goodman was a nominee for Prep Basketball Player of the Year.
