Oregon State is among the nation's leaders in All-American honors
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Oregon State redshirt junior Jake Thompson, sophomore Nick Madrigal and freshman Jake Mulholland have all been named All-Americans by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). Thompson and Madrigal have also been named All-Americans by Perfect Game.
Â
Thompson is a First-Team selection by both, Mulholland to the Second Team by the NCBWA and Madrigal to the Second Team by Perfect Game and the Third Team by the NCBWA.
Thompson, Madrigal and Luke Heimlich were also named All-Region First-Team selections by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA).
Â
Thompson, who was recently drafted in the fourth round by Boston, leads the nation with a 14-0 record and is fifth with a 1.52 earned run average. The right-hander from Florence, Ore., is a finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy and Gregg Olson Award, and he is the first OSU player to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American (economics major) since 2007. He was also named an All-Pac-12 First-Team selection at the conclusion of the conference season.
Â
Mulholland, meanwhile, is just the third Oregon State freshman to be named an outright All-American, joining Michael Conforto (2012) and Bryce Fehmel (2016). A left-handed pitcher from Snohomish, Wash., he enters the College World Series with a 6-1 record and 1.31 ERA in 48 innings. He leads OSU with six saves and was recently named a Freshman All-American by the NCBWA.
Â
Madrigal carries the Pac-12's second-best batting average at .383 into the CWS opener Saturday. He has 19 doubles, two triples, four home runs, 36 RBI and 16 stolen bases and was named both the Pac-12's Player and Defensive Player of the Year in addition to being one of 25 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award. The sophomore from Elk Grove, Calif., was a Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention selection (sociology).
