The two bring OSU's selections to five this year
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State junior third baseman Michael Gretler and redshirt senior left-handed pitcher Max Engelbrekt both heard their names called by Major League teams on Wednesday.
Â
Gretler was selected in the 39th round, 1,168th overall, by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, while Engelbrekt went in the 40th round, 1,213th overall, by the Washington Nationals.
Â
The selection is the second of Gretler's career – he was also taken in the 39th round in 2014 by Boston but did not sign before coming to Oregon State.
Â
He is batting .300 this season, totaling 10 doubles, four triples, four home runs and 32 runs batted in over 58 games as he and the Beavers prepare for the College World Series. He has played in 130 career games for OSU, batting .270 with 14 doubles, four triples, five home runs and 48 RBI.
Â
The Bonney Lake, Wash., native was a 2017 All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention selection, and, a finance major, he was also named Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team.
Â
Engelbrekt's pick is the first of his career and comes as he takes a 3-0 record and 0.48 earned run average to the College World Series. He has appeared in 16 games this season, and allowed eight hits in 18 2/3 innings. He has pitched in 80 career games for OSU, collecting 22 saves with and 11-5 record and 1.97 ERA.
Â
The Seattle native was named the Pac-12's Scholar-Athlete of the Year in baseball this season and was also a Conference All-Academic First-Team selection. His earned his Bachelor's degree in finance this past summer and is currently pursuing his Master of Business Administration.
Â
The selections cap the team's draft choices at five. Drew Rasmussen was taken in the first round by Tampa Bay, KJ Harrison in the third round to Milwaukee and Jake Thompson went in the fourth round to Boston.
