Seth Berger Joins Men’s Basketball Program
April 13, 2017 | Men's Basketball
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State head coach Wayne Tinkle and his staff announced Thursday the addition of Seth Berger who signed a Financial Aid Agreement to join the Beaver basketball program.
Berger, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound forward from Seattle, Wash., spent the past four years at UMass and is eligible immediately for his final college season due to the NCAA's graduate transfer rules.
Berger joins a 2017 class that includes Alfred Hollins, a 6-foot-6, 195-pound forward from San Francisco, Calif., Zach Reichle, a 6-foot-5, 195-pound guard from Wilsonville, Ore., and Ethan Thompson, a 6-foot-5, 180-pound guard from Los Angeles, Calif.
Seth Berger
Berger played 89 games in four years at UMass, including 31 starts, and averaged 3.0 points and 2.3 rebounds, while shooting 48.8 percent from the field. He started 16 of the 32 games this past season and averaged 2.6 points and 2.3 rebounds, while shooting 50.8 percent from the field.
As a junior, Berger averaged 5.2 points and 3.3 rebounds in 19.5 minutes per game. He started the first eight games as a sophomore before suffering a season-ending stress fracture in his left foot. He played in 18 games as a true freshman in 2013-14.
Berger attended Ballard High School in Seattle, Wash., where he was ranked the 38th-best small forward in the nation and the No. 4 player in the State of Washington by ESPN. He averaged 15.8 points and 8.5 rebounds as a senior in 2012-13 to earn KingCo 4A First Team All-League honors.
Wayne Tinkle on Seth Berger:
"We are thrilled to add Seth Berger to our squad. He brings incredible maturity and basketball IQ right away as a graduate transfer. We are very familiar with his game. He's a smart, tough-nosed defender but also has a very good skill level on the offensive end. He knows how to cut without the ball, can shoot the three, finishes well around the basket.
"He's an experienced, high IQ guy who plays with his motor revved up and will really be a great addition to our roster for the 2017-18 season."
Berger chose Oregon State because: "being from the Northwest it is great to be able to come closer to home. Knowing Coach Tinkle a little bit also made it easier to connect with him and trust him, as well as the rest of the coaching staff."
He will earn his degree in economics from UMass this spring and plans to enroll in Oregon State's interdisciplinary studies program.
