Beavers' Big Sixth Inning Helps Push Past Cowgirls
March 04, 2017 | Softball
SAN DIEGO – The Oregon State softball team kept its weekend perfect with a 7-2 victory against McNeese State on Saturday morning at the San Diego Classic. Taylor Cotton, who is coming off a no-hitter yesterday, combined with Meehra Nelson to allow just two Cowgirl hits in the win. The Beavers rattled off four runs in the sixth inning to help defeat McNeese State.
Â
Oregon State got on the board first, after McKenna Arriola came home on a wild pitch to lead 1-0 after the first inning.
Â
The Beavers held their small lead the majority of the game, until McNeese State hit a 2-out double off the left-field fence, which scored two runs. Oregon State wouldn't trail for long, as Alysha Everett started the top of the sixth with a triple down the right-field line. Sammi Noland followed with a single to left the following at-bat to tie the game up 2-2.
Â
Oregon State retook the lead later in the inning after some well-executed 2-out hitting. Jessica Garcia primed the run with a single before McKenna Arriola recorded an infield single to score Noland and to gain the advantage. Shelby Weeks then mashed the ball at the next at bat to the left-center wall to increase the Beaver lead to three.
Â
Beavers added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh, keyed by a Noland triple and an RBI by Alyssa Pelegrin.
Â
The Cowgirls put a runner on base in the bottom of the inning, but the Beavers' defense shut down any scoring attempt.
Garcia, Noland and Kaylee Shafer finished with two hits a piece, while Noland and Weeks tallied two RBI each.
Meehra Nelson picked up the win, after coming in to relieve Taylor Cotton in the fifth inning. Cotton started the game and hurled 4 1/3 inning, allowing just two hits and striking out five. Nelson finished the game facing seven batters and not allowing a hit.
Â
Oregon State (11-5) will finish the San Diego Classic tomorrow with two games against Detroit Mercy and San Diego at the San Diego Softball Complex.
