CORVALLIS, Ore. – Five Oregon State boats head north to Spokane, Wash. to take on Gonzaga Sunday morning at Silver Lake.
"We pushed it through finals week, now we are going to start off our Spring Break with a big race against Gonzaga. This marks the start of kicking our season into full gear."
The Beavers plan to have five eight-man boats in action Sunday, including a Varsity 8, Junior Varsity 8, Third Varsity 8, and two boats in the Freshman 8 category.
COURSE: The 2,000-meter course is located on Silver Lake, in Silver Lake, Wash.
RACE TIMES: The Beavers' are set to hit the water at 9 a.m. and conclude the morning with the freshman race at 10:30 a.m.
RESULTS: Results can be found by following Oregon State Men's Rowing on Twitter (@beavermrowing). A full recap of the morning will be available at osubeavers.com shortly after the regatta.
As the Beavers head to face the Bulldogs, we take a closer look at Frank Horpel a senior from Castro Valley, Calif., majoring in sociology.
Do you have a specific pre-race ritual?
I try to get my body as loose as possible about an hour prior to racing. My routine usually consists of arm swings, leg swings, and sometimes a light jog to get the blood flowing.
What has been your favorite moment as an OSU athlete?
Building tight relationships with my teammates and other OSU athletes.
If you had a pump-up song, what would it be?
My pump-up song would be Fire Squad by J. Cole.
If you could play a different college sport at Oregon State, what would it be and why?
I would play basketball, I have always had a high interest in the sport, whether I am playing or watching it.
What do you like best about Corvallis?
When spring term rolls through and the sun comes out. It is the most beautiful place you could possibly be.
How would you describe your teammates?
They have a good work ethic, are passionate about what they do, and very enjoyable to be around.
How would you describe the coaching staff?
The coaches are very good mentors. I have never had coaches with an ability to motivate and get me to find that second gear in the middle of a really hard work out. Another thing about these coaches is how they can keep us focused on the end goal that we as a team are trying to accomplish, and emphasize that goal every day in practice to keep us all on the same page.
Where are you most excited to race at?
IRAs in California. Everyone will be there.
Describe a funny or interesting part of studying your major at Oregon State.
The most interesting thing about being a sociology major here at OSU was when I got to visit the Salem Penitentiary (prison). Myself and several other classmates had the opportunity to interact with inmates and that was a fascinating experience.
What would be your favorite vacation destination?
Australia. It's far away, I love the accents, and it looks absolutely amazing there.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
My ideal job would be to run my own aquatics program. I want to be the head swim coach or rowing coach with a coaching staff to help me for each age group if the program expands.
If you were a superhero what super power would you want? Why?
I would want to be able to freeze time. If I was behind in schoolwork or in another situation and felt as though time wasn't in my favor, I would use the time freeze as an opportunity to catch up on what I had to do.
