Brown scores 12 points in win
CORVALLIS – The No. 2 seed Oregon State women's basketball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament with a 56-55 win over 15-seed Long Beach State Friday afternoon at Gill Coliseum.
"Credit to Long Beach State, they played a great game today," said Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck. "They were well coached and they played like they had nothing to lose. This was a great game, and a good win for us. I think this game showed that we're gritty and tough. All year this team has found a way to win games, and that's what they did today."
The game was played in front of nearly 5,000 fans, most of them supporting the Beavers.
Oregon State held Long Beach State to 33.9 percent shooting in the contest, and dominated the glass, holding a 44-29 advantage in rebounds.
Redshirt-junior Breanna Brown led the Beavers, scoring eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter. She finished with seven rebounds and three blocks. Junior Marie Gulich tallied 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks in just 23 minutes of playing time.
Freshman Mikayla Pivec scored 10 points on 5-for-8 shooting, and tallied all seven of her rebounds on the defensive end. Senior Gabriella Hanson also matched a team-high with seven boards.
The defenses dominated the early stages of the game, as Long Beach State took a 5-4 lead into the first media timeout. The 49ers went ahead by five out of the break, before Oregon State jumped in front 15-10, powered by six-straight points from Gulich. Long Beach State bounced back to level the score at 15, before sophomore Taylor Kalmer tallied the last basket of the frame to send the Beavers to the second quarter up 17-15.
Long Beach State retook the lead early in the second period, jumping ahead 27-23 mid-way through the frame. The 49ers led for the majority of the quarter, before Gulich put Oregon State up by two late in the half. LBSU hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to take a 30-29 edge into the locker-room.
Oregon State used a 6-0 third-quarter run to go back in front, and went ahead 40-34 at the period's media timeout. Oregon State would score the final five points of the period to enter the closing frame up 44-39.
Long Beach State got back within one early in the fourth quarter, and would take the lead with 2:40 left in the contest. The Beavers would retake the lead on a pair of free throws with just over a minute to play, and played strong defense on the final possession to claim the one-point win.
The Beavers will host the winner of this afternoon's matchup between Creighton and Toledo in the NCAA Tournament's second round. That game will be played on Sunday at a time to be announced Friday evening.
