Benzin Wins Both Matches In Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Olivia Benzin went 2-0 at the Gifford Great 8 Collegiate Match Play on Monday, but the Oregon State women's golf team narrowly lost matches to two of the nation's top teams.
The Beavers lost 3-2 to No. 2 USC in the opening round and 3-2 to No. 27 Ohio State in the semifinals of the consolation bracket.
Oregon State will face Oregon in the 7th-place match in Tuesday's final round at the Brentwood Country Club.
The Beavers battled No. 2 USC in the opening round before falling 3-2. Benzin, a sophomore from Tacoma, Wash., defeated Gabriella Then 2 and 1, and junior Susie Cavanagh took down Victoria Morgan 4 and 3 for the Beavers' two points in the match.
In other first round matches, No. 9 UCLA defeated No. 40 Oregon 4-1, No. 22 Purdue won 3.5-1.5 over No. 27 Ohio State and No. 36 Colorado slipped past No. 8 Georgia 3-2.
Benzin cruised to a 5 and 4 win over Rio Watanabe of Ohio State in the afternoon for a full point. Junior Hannah Swanson finished all square with Katja Pogacar and Cavanagh split with Jessica Porvasnik to each earn a half point.
In other semifinal matches, USC defeated Purdue 3.5-1.5 and UCLA slipped past Colorado 3-2 to make it a Los Angeles championship on Tuesday. Georgia knocked off Oregon 4-1 in the other semifinals consolation match.
