Cotton Punishes Hornets with One-Hit Shutout
March 11, 2017 | Softball
FRESNO, Calif. – Senior Taylor Cotton picked up her sixth win of the season after hurling a one-hit shutout Saturday afternoon against Sacramento State at the Fresno State Invite. The lefty has been throwing some of her best material in the last 28 innings, dating back to her no-hitter against Miami (Ohio) on March 3. Since, she has posted just 10 hits, three wins and struck out 28 batters in five games. On the season she carries a 1.16 ERA with three shutouts and four complete games.
Â
Oregon State took the lead during its first turn of the game. The Beavs recorded back-to-back singles before Natalie Hampton doubled down the right-field line to score both runners. The two RBI moves Hampton to 137 total, just seven shy of being the all-time runs batted in leader at Oregon State. Recorded holder Tarrah Beyster (1997-2000) finished her career with 143.
Â
The Beavers added to their lead in the fourth inning after a two-out single by Sammi Noland put her on base. Kayleen Shafer brought her across at the next at bat after she doubled to left field, but rounded second too far was called out trying to get back.
Â
Oregon State defense locked down the field the rest of the game, not allowing a runner to get on base, while Cotton punched out four batters.
Â
Cotton pitched the whole game, allowing just one hit and striking out seven. Shelby Weeks and Shafer were the two Beavers to record multiple hits in the win, while eight total players tallied a base hit.
Â
The Oregon State softball team will continue at the Fresno State Invite tonight with a rematch against Fresno State scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
