Wiese earns First Team Honors
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State head coach Scott Rueck was named Pac-12 Media Coach of the Year, and senior Sydney Wiese made the All-Pac-12 Media Team, the conference office announced Wednesday. Senior Gabriella Hanson was also named to the All-Defensive Team and Mikayla Pivec made the All-Freshman Team.
Rueck earns Media Coach of the Year honors for the fourth time, and is the only coach to win the honor more than once since the award began in 2010. The seventh-year coach is already second on Oregon State's career wins list with 149, and has led Oregon State to three-consecutive Pac-12 regular season titles. Rueck was one of four finalists for Naismith Coach of the Year last season, and finished second to only UConn's Geno Auriemma in the 2016 AP Coach of the Year voting.
Wiese became one of 14 players in conference history to make the All-Pac-12 Coaches Team four times yesterday. The senior, who has already been named to the watch lists for the Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy, Wade Trophy, Ann Meyers Drysdale Award and Lieberman Award, is the Pac-12's career record holder for 3-pointers. The senior is already in the top-seven in Oregon State history in career points, and holds the school record for career assists. Wiese leads the Beavers with 15.4 points per game, as is among the top four in the nation in 3-point percentage.
Hanson is known as one of the best defensive players in the nation. The senior is the only player in the country to successfully slow down Washington standout Kelsey Plum, holding her to an 8-for-23 shooting performance in the teams' only meeting of the year. Hanson has played in 110 Oregon State wins, more than any player in program history, and has seen action in 133 games overall, two short of Deven Hunter's program record.
???????Pivec is Oregon State's 13th ever All-Freshman selection, and its first since Wiese in 2014. The Lynnwood, Wash, native has started the last 21 games for Oregon State, and is averaging 6.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game this season. Pivec sits third on the team in both assists and steals, with 66 and 24, respectively. She has been in double-figures seven times this season, and earned Play4Kay Shootout All-Tournament honors earlier this year.
Oregon State will head to the Pac-12 Tournament this week, after locking down the regular season title outright on Sunday. The Beavers will open the event at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, as they take on the winner of Thursday's game between USC and California.
