Beavers Record Split at Mary Nutter
February 24, 2017 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – The Oregon State softball team finished day one of the famous Mary Nutter Classic 1-1 on Friday at the Big League Dreams Complex. The Beavers suffered a 7-4 loss in their opening game to Long Beach State, but rebounded with a 10-2 victory over NC State in the night cap.
Â
GAME 1 VS. LONG BEACH STATE
The Beach jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the Beavers struggled to get any base runners on in the first three innings. Oregon State finally got a pair of runners on in the fourth, but failed to score until the fifth inning. Sammi Noland put the Beavs on the board with a solo home run down the left-field line – her third of the season - to break the drought.
Â
Long Beach State came back with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth, but Oregon State had an answer. McKenna Arriola started the bottom of the inning with an infield single, before Shelby Weeks tripled down the right field line to drive her in. Two batters later Alysha Everett blasted her fourth home run of the season to cut the deficit to three. The Beavers failed to get a runner on in the seventh and fell to The Beach.
Â
Nerissa Eason recorded the loss after making her sixth start of the season and struck out four batters, while giving up eight hits and five walks.
Â
Arriola finished with a pair of hits to lead the Beavers, while Weeks, Natalie Hampton, Everett and Noland recorded an RBI.
Â
GAME 2 VS. NC STATE
Oregon State took and early 1-0 lead after an RBI single by Weeks scored Arriola. NC State tied the game up in the third, but that did not last long. The Beavers added three runs in the third inning, before really opening the scoring up in the fourth.
Â
Oregon State started the fourth-frame run by walking in a run before a pair of singles by Everett and Noland gave it an 8-1 advantage. Alyssa Pelegrin recorded another single two batters later to score another two runs and to cap the scoring run.
Â
The Wolfpack tried to make a comeback in the top of the fifth inning, recording a one-out double and followed it with a triple to score a run. The Beavers defense locked down forcing an infield pop out and ground out to end the game and secure the victory.
Â
Taylor Cotton earned the victory after pitching 4 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on four hits and struck out six batters before being relieved by Meehra Nelson in the fifth. Nelson finished the final two outs, forcing the pop out and ground out.
Â
Four Beavers finished with multiple hits, while Noland paced the offense with four RBI.
Â
Oregon State (7-3) will continue action at the Mary Nutter Classic tomorrow with a game against Houston starting at 12:30 p.m.
