February 11, 2017 | Women's Track & Field
SEATTLE – The Oregon State track & field team set one school record and had nine school top-10 times or marks this weekend at the Husky Classic at the Dempsey Indoor Center.
The Beavers have established three school records and posted 20 all-time top-10 times or marks in their two meets this season. They set two school records and had 11 all-time top 10 performances at the Washington Invitational on Jan. 27-28.
On Saturday, Kerissa D'Arpino placed fourth in the 60 meters in 7.61, just .03 off her school mark. Venessa D'Arpino was fifth in 7.62, the No. 2 time in school history. They also ran 7.65 or better in the preliminaries.
On Friday, Venessa D'Arpino placed second in the 200 meters in a school-record 24.67, breaking her old school standard of 24.70. Kerissa D'Arpino took fourth in 24.77, the second-fastest time in OSU history.
"They ran very well this weekend and have been outstanding in our first two meets," OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said of the D'Arpinos. "Today was an excellent series of 60s and on Friday they excelled in the 200."
Madelayne Varela won her flight and placed seventh in the triple jump in 38-6, tying Bethany Imperial's No. 3 all-time mark. Kara Hallock placed eighth in the 60 hurdles in 8.95 after running 8.86 in the prelims. Rachel Proteau tied for eighth in the high jump at 5-3.75.
Varela is a graduate transfer from Oregon, Proteau a graduate transfer from Kansas State. Hallock redshirted in 2016 after a standout 2015 season following her transfer from Lane Community College.
"Madelayne and Rachel have added great depth to their two events and we anticipate them contributing even more as the season progresses," Sullivan said. "And it's great to have Kara back, a year stronger and a year faster."
Four other Beavers posted career top-10 indoor times or marks.
The Beavers are idle next weekend. They conclude the indoor season at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships, set for Feb. 24-25 at the Dempsey Indoor Center. The outdoor season starts March 17-18 at the Lewis & Clark Invitational in Portland.
