Beavers Set To Face Eastern Oregon
November 07, 2017 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – For the first time since the 2015 season, Oregon State wrestling opens the dual-meet season at home. On Thursday, Nov. 9 the Beavers play host to the visiting Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon in Gill Coliseum at 7 p.m.
Oregon State was receiving votes in the first USA Today/NWCA Coaches poll released on Oct. 31.
The Beavers hold four competitors who are ranked by InterMat in its Nov. 7 poll. Redshirt junior 125-pounder Ronnie Bresser is No. 10; redshirt senior Jack Hathaway is No. 18 at 141 pounds; redshirt junior 197-pounder Corey Griego is No. 16 and redshirt senior Amarveer Dhesi is No. 5 at heavyweight.
Bresser and Dhesi will not be competing against Eastern Oregon.
In the Orange & Black Intrasquad scrimmage redshirt freshman Devan Turner defeated redshirt junior Kegan Calkins 8-4 earning the go ahead at 133 pounds. Last season, Turner went 2-2 before being sidelined with an injury.
There are still some questions to be answered to who will take the reins at some weight classes. True freshman Hunter Willits impressed with a 13-0 major decision in the Orange & Black Intrasquad, and will get the nod at 157. Willits is a four-time high school champion in Colorado, and a two-time Fargo Junior Cadet Nationals All-American.
"[Hunter] Willits at 157 looked good last night and wants to wrestle this year as a true freshman," said 12th year head coach Jim Zalesky.
It is still unclear who will get the not at 149, 165 and 174. "I think we have some weight classes to still get decided for this Thursday," said Zalesky. "Really this next two weeks I am looking at who will step up in competition."
In the Orange & Black Intrasquad, sophomore Kurt Mode prevailed over redshirt senior Izaak Tobin by decision. Tobin does have experience in a Beavers uniform, holding a 17-16 overall record.
Freshman Aaron Olmos won by decision over sophomore Drake McKee in the O&B at 165, while freshman Myles Terry used a major decision over Joseph DeMatteo to win at 174.
Redshirt sophomore Seth McLeod gets the nod at 184. McLeod went 7-9 in his inaugural season with the Beavers in 2016-17. He took second place at the Boxer Open last season.
NCAA experience will help redshirt senior Cody Crawford at heavyweight. The Turner, Ore. native holds a 75-33 overall record at Oregon State, and went 24-9 a season ago. Crawford was a Reno Tournament of Champions winner, and took second at the Pac-12 Championships in 2017.
The Mountaineers are only beginning their third year as a revived wrestling program that was cut in the 1970's. EOU went 3-8 in duals a season ago.
"It's their third season right now, and we've seen them at open tournaments, but Ty Vinson who is an assistant over there wrestled for me here," said Zalesky. Â "They are getting their program restarted and it's good to have an instate meet to get things going."
The Beavers begin tournament season on Sunday, Nov. 12 at the Mike Clock Open in Forest Grove, Ore.
