Slama Fires 5-Under 67 To Tie School Record

HIGHLANDS RANCH, Colo. – Ellie Slama fired a 5-under 67 in the first round of the Ron Moore Invitational on Friday to lead the Oregon State women's golf team and tie the program record.

Slama, a freshman from Salem, Ore., dropped in seven birdies at the par-72, 6,450-yard Highlands Ranch Golf Club to finish with a 67 and put her in second place. Her round ties a school record set last year by Elyse Smidinger, when she competed as an individual at the Rose City Collegiate in Aurora, Ore.

Ingrid Gutierrez of New Mexico is one stroke ahead of Slama after carding a 6-under 66.

As a team, the Beavers are tied for third place with UTSA after posting a 2-under 286 in the first round of the three-day, 54-hole tournament. New Mexico and Denver are tied for first place in the 13-team field with a 5-under 283.

The 2 under equals the fourth-lowest single round in Oregon State history. The Beavers set the mark last spring with a 10-under 278 at the NCAA Regionals in Lubbock, Texas.

"Overall we played steady as a team," Oregon State head coach Dawn Shockley said. "It's great to see Ellie come out, play well and give us a low number. With Ellie, we've been working to focus on the things she can control on the course and it's starting to show in her results."

Junior Olivia Benzin, junior Haley Nist and sophomore Mari Nishiura all shot a 1-over 73 to put them in a tie for 29th place. Nist carded four birdies, while Benzin and Nishiura each finished the day with three.

Senior Susie Cavanagh is a stroke behind her trio of teammates and tied for 38th place after posting a 2-over 74.

Sophomore Nicole Schroeder, who is competing as an individual, is tied for 11th place after shooting a 1-under 71. Her career best score is a 2-under 70 at last spring's Meadow Club Women's Collegiate.

"Nicole had a good day playing as an individual," Shockley said. "This is a good golf course and it defended itself with some tricky pin placements. We learned a lot today, did a little work after the round and are ready to come out and compete hard tomorrow."
