Beavers to battle Northern Colorado, Wyoming
January 12, 2017 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State wrestling team will unveil a revamped lineup this weekend when it resumes the dual-meet season with nonconference matchups at Northern Colorado and Wyoming.
Senior Joey Palmer (14-4) makes his dual debut at 133 pounds after going at 141 for much of the season. He was the Pacific-12 Conference runner-up, and an NCAA qualifier, at that weight in 2015-16.
Junior Jack Hathaway (11-5) makes his 2016-17 dual debut at 141 after backing up Palmer in OSU's previous four duals. He was OSU's starter at that weight last season, went 15-14 and placed fifth at the Pac-12 championships. He was the Pac-12 champion and an NCAA qualifier at 133 pounds in 2014-15.
"Joey tried it at 141 but he just wasn't big enough," OSU coach Jim Zalesky said in explaining the reasoning behind the shift. "I think these moves will help our team's strength."
Freshman Devan Turner (2-2) started at 133 in the first four duals. However, it's expected he'll be shut down for the balance of the season due to various injuries.
The Beavers (1-3) face Northern Colorado (0-4) in Greeley at 6 p.m. Friday, and conclude the road trip against Wyoming (1-4) in Laramie at noon on Sunday. Wyoming hosts South Dakota on Friday night.
It's their first overall action since the Midlands Championships, and their initial dual since a Dec. 15 matchup with Utah Valley, where OSU fell 17-16 on criteria after building an early lead in the lower weights.
"I'm looking for effort and a better performance," Zalesky said. "We just haven't had a good team performance yet, especially in duals. We are looking for consistency and for some guys to step up and perform better.
"We haven't had a dual in almost a month. The dual-meet season is where you have to make your adjustments week-to-week; there are generally two matches every weekend.
"So we're getting a lot of competition, which is good."
Northern Colorado senior 141-pounder Timmy Box is ranked No. 20 by InterMat. He is a second-year transfer from CSU Bakersfield who took fourth place at the 2015 Pac-12 championships.
Wyoming features junior 2016 NCAA runner-up Bryce Meredith at 141 pounds; he is ranked No. 8 by InterMat. Â Other ranked Cowboys are senior Cole Mendenhall (#16, 149); junior Archie Colgan (#17, 157), and sophomore Brandon Ashworth (#15, 165).
Former Beaver Ronnie Stevens is Wyoming's starter at 133. A redshirt junior, Stevens transferred to UW this season after spending three years at OSU as a backup. His younger brother Max is a redshirt freshman for the Cowboys.
The Beavers start Pac-12 action against Stanford on Jan. 30 with a 7 p.m. dual at Gill Coliseum that will be televised by the Pac-12 Network. They are five-time defending Pac-12 champions.
This year's Pac-12 Championships are Feb. 26, at Stanford. The NCAA Championships are March 16-18 at St. Louis.
