3V Wins Final, Varsity 8 Finished 17th
June 05, 2016 | Men's Rowing
WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – The Oregon State men's rowing team completed its season Sunday morning at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association national championships at Lake Mercer in New Jersey.
“All of our boats beat their seed and the 3V winning their final was awesome,” head coach Gabe Winkler said.
“Today was about the seniors. They've been working for four, and even five, years to get to this point. I'm really sad to see them go. The young guys backed them up with full commitment and capped off the season with great races.”
The Beavers' Third Varsity 8 took first in the Third Final to finish 13th overall at IRA Championships. OSU covered the 2,000-meter course in a time of 6-minutes, 8.2-seconds pulling in 2.5 seconds ahead of the next crew, from Pennsylvania.
Oregon State's Varsity 8 crew, which executed a near flawless race in its semifinal on Saturday, registered a fifth-place finish in the Third Final on Sunday. The Beavers, who were ranked No. 20 entering the weekend, finished the national championship regatta by beating their ranking and finishing 17th after recording a time of 6:04.490.
The Second Varsity 8 also finished 17th overall and took fifth place in the Third Final. The Beavers found themselves going stroke for stroke with Drexel and won the final sprint ending with a time of 6:12.920 just ahead of Drexel's 6:13.260.
Seniors Bobby Vernazza (V8), Josh West (V8), Jordan Zielinski (V8), Collin Griffitts (V8), and David King (3V8) all raced their final race in the Orange and Black on Sunday.
