June 02, 2016 | Wrestling
CORVALLIS -- Amarveer Dhesi of the wrestling team and Jamie Weisner of the women's basketball team earned the top honors at the 18th annual Bennys Wednesday night at the Club Level in Reser Stadium. The event celebrates the top achievements of Oregon State University student-athletes during the course of the academic year.

Dhesi earned the prestigious Male Athlete of the Year Benny. The Pac-12 Wrestler of the Year captured the league title at the heavyweight class and earned All-America honors by placing fifth at the NCAA Championships.
Weisner posted one of the best seasons in program history. The guard was named an All-American by the Coaches' Association, and was tabbed as the Pac-12 Player of the Year. She ended her career as the sixth-highest scoring player in Oregon State history, and is among the team's top-eight in career rebounds. Weisner is currently playing with the Washington Mystics of the WNBA.

Newcomer of the Year Bennys were presented to Tres Tinkle of the men's basketball team and Meehra Nelson of the softball team. Tinkle helped the Beavers advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1990 and was the club's second-leading scorer and rebounder. Nelson was one of the top freshman pitchers in the country earning Pac-12 Freshman of the Week honors twice on her way to a school-record seven saves and 16 victories.

The male and female moments of the year Bennys were introduced to this year's end-of-the-year gala. Stephen Thompson Jr.'s coast-to-coast three-point game-winning shot against Washington on Feb. 24 was selected as the top highlight from the men's side. The women's basketball team's 60-57 victory over Baylor in the NCAA Dallas Regional finals was the top female moment.

Three football student-athletes accepted Bennys Wednesday night; Drew Clarkson for the Robert Byers Spirit Award, Ricky Ortiz for the Glen Klein Community Service Award and Elu Aydon for the Other Side Talent Show. Three scholar-athletes were recognized, Seth Thomas (wrestling), Kelsi Schaer (track & field) and Maureen Tremblay (track & field).
The men's soccer and women's cross country teams were acknowledged with the Everyday Champions Academic Team awards.
