CORVALLIS, Ore. – Ronnie Stacy has signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Oregon State men's basketball program for the 2016-17 season, head coach Wayne Tinkle announced Wednesday.
Stacy, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound point guard from Alexander City, Ala., played the past two seasons at Tyler Junior College in Texas.
“Ronnie is a prototypical point guard who always looks to pass first and get his teammates involved,” Tinkle said. “He knows how to run the offense, get the ball to the scorers and handle pressure.
“We think he has the ability to be a lockdown defender on the perimeter. He's very competitive and will help our young stable of guards improve on a daily basis. He brings maturity, toughness and leadership to our team.
“We are thrilled to be adding another high-character person to our program.”
Stacy joins a recruiting class that includes Keondre Dew, a 6-foot-8, 215-pound small forward from San Bernardino, Calif.; Ben Koné, a 6-foot-9, 235-pound power forward from San Jose, Calif.; and JaQuori McLaughlin, a 6-foot-4, 180-pound point guard from Gig Harbor, Wash.
While running the point at Tyler Junior College, Stacy averaged 8.6 points, 5.2 assists and 2.7 rebounds in 28 games as a sophomore and 4.4 points, 4.4 assists and 1.7 rebounds in 34 games as a freshman. In the two seasons, he shot 47.9 percent (143-for-298) from the field and had an assist-turnover ratio of 1.89.
“Ronnie is an athletic, pass-first point guard,” Tyler Junior College head coach Mike Marquis said. “He is a good student and has good leadership qualities. He has the ability to be a physical defender and can finish above the rim. He should be a terrific addition to the OSU community.”
Stacy averaged 18 points, eight rebounds and five assists per game during his senior season at Benjamin Russell High School in Alexander City, Ala.
He chose Oregon State because of the “good environment, great people and it's a beautiful place.”
