Beavers Make History In Sweep Of UCLA
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State baseball team ended the 2016 regular season with some history on Sunday.
Luke Heimlich tossed a complete-game shutout to help the Beavers defeat UCLA, 6-0, in the regular season finale at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
The Beavers, without the win, shut out the Bruins in all three games of the series. Oregon State, which has been playing baseball since 1907, had never shut out the same team for three straight games.
Over the weekend, Oregon State (35-19 overall, 16-14 Pac-12 Conference) held the Bruins to 16 hits and two walks with 17 strikeouts. OSU's starters, consisting of Travis Eckert, Bryce Fehmel and Heimlich ate up 24 2/3 of those innings, with the latter two tossing complete games.
Heimlich picked up the win with his first career complete game. The lefty allowed five hits with eight strikeouts to improve to 7-4 on the year.
Oregon State jumped on the board early, posting a 1-0 lead in the first thanks to a single from Christian Donahue.
The Beavers made it 3-0 after two thanks to a wild pitch and RBI groundout by Trever Morrison.
Donahue doubled home two in the Beavers' three-run seventh inning to help the Beavers to the 6-0 victory.
Donahue's and Kyle Nobach's two hits apiece paced the Beavers' offense, which tallied seven overall off seven UCLA (25-31, 12-18) pitchers. Jake Bird, who made the start, took the loss to drop to 1-6 on the year. He allowed five hits and three runs in six innings of work.
