Logan Ice Now A Semifinalist For Bench Award
May 18, 2016 | Baseball
WICHITA, Kan. – The Johnny Bench Award has reduced its watch list to 15 semifinalists, and unsurprisingly, Oregon State junior Logan Ice finds himself on it.
He is one of three catchers from the Pac-12 Conference on the list, and for good reason. The junior is batting .336 with 12 doubles, five triples, seven home runs and 39 runs batted in this season. Defensively, he's been stellar, recording a .992 fielding percentage and has thrown out better than 40 percent of attempted basestealers.
Ice's .336 batting average ranks him eighth in the Pac-12, while his 39 RBI place him fifth. He's also second in slugging percentage (.618), fifth in on-base percentage (.460) and fourth with 41 runs scored. Ice is also tied for third with five triples – the only catcher to rank – and tied for sixth with seven home runs.
Defensively, he's fifth in the conference with 18 basestealers thrown out, and is five shy of the Pac-12's leader.
The Johnny Bench Award is given annually to the nation's top collegiate catcher. Three finalists will be announced June 6. The 2016 winner will then be announced at the 19th Annual Greater Wichita Sports Banquet on June 30, 2016.
The Beavers next hit the road for a three-game series at USC in Los Angeles. The series opens Friday at 7:05 p.m. PT, with game two Saturday at 1:05 p.m. The finale is Sunday at 12:05 p.m. All three games can be seen live on Pac-12 Oregon.
