Haun sets pole vault mark
May 16, 2016 | Women's Track & Field
SEATTLE, Wash. – Junior Helen Ann Haun set a school record and placed fourth in the pole vault on Sunday to lead the Oregon State track & field team on Day 2 of the Pacific-12 Conference championships at Husky Track.
The Beavers finished in 11th place with 23.50 points, a four-fold increase from 2015 and the most in a conference meet since the program's reinstatement in 2006. Their previous high was 12 in 2013.
"There are always events where you think you could have done better, whether you finish first, fifth or wherever," OSU coach Kelly Sullivan said. "But overall we had an outstanding meet for a program fielding a truly complete team for the first time.
"Our athletes competed at their best in the biggest meet of the season, under adverse weather conditions, and we set two school records, had seven school career top-10 marks, and numerous PRs, even in events we had not competed in until this meet.
"We had almost 20 all-time top-10 performances in our final three meets. That shows me our women remained dedicated and committed throughout a very long indoor and outdoor season," Sullivan added. "To single out one or two women would be unfair to everyone who competed.
"I am incredibly proud of our entire team. I am already excited about our upcoming cross country season and eager to see what we can do on the track in 2017 with another solid year of training and with the return of several key competitors, who would have scored at this meet, after they redshirted this spring."
Haun cleared 12-10 to break the school record of 12-5.50 she shared with freshman Gillette Field and junior Annie Sidor. Field cleared 12-2 and tied for fifth place in the pole vault, giving the Beavers multiple placers in an event they have competed in for only three seasons.
Haun's performance was the second school mark set by field athletes at the championships. On Saturday, sophomore McKenzie Byrd took fifth place in the javelin with a school-record mark of 144-3.
The Beavers had five top-5 finishes and their short relay scored, each bests for the program since it returned from an 18-year hiatus for the 2006 season.
Junior Devin Collins took fifth in the 100 hurdles in 13.62. She scratched from the finals of 400 hurdles.
Junior Melissa Ausman moved up to fourth place from eighth place in the discus by unleashing a throw of 167-0 on her final attempt. It was a four-spot improvement for Ausman, who placed eighth at the 2015 Pac-12 meet.
The 400 relay foursome of Jasmin McKenzie, Kerissa D'Arpino, Venessa D'Arpino and Collins took sixth place in 46.14, the second-best time in school history. They ran 46.74 in Saturday's preliminaries.
The 1600 relay team of Venessa D'Arpino, Kelsi Schaer, Juliana Mount and Kerissa D'Arpino placed 11th in 3:51.05, the fourth-best time in school history.
Junior Morgan Anderson took 12th in the 5,000 in 16:31.09, the third-fastest time in school history.
Senior Rachel Picknell fouled on her three throws in the hammer and received no mark. She also placed ninth in the discus at 150-6.
Seniors Michele Turney (38-0.75) and Bethany Imperial (37-10.50) finished 14th and 15th in the triple jump.
The meet concluded a regular season in which the Beavers set 16 school records and posted 60 all-time top-10 times or marks.
Sara Almen (high jump), Collins (100, 400 hurdles) and Ausman (discus) will now participate in the NCAA West Preliminary, set for May 24-26 at Lawrence, Kan. The top 12 finishers in each event at the two national regionals advance to the NCAA championships, scheduled for June 8-11 at Hayward Field.
