Beavers Edged In Wednesday's Civil War
April 28, 2016 | Baseball
EUGENE, Ore. – Scotland Church struck out six in a career-long 6 1/3 innings of relief and 10th-ranked Oregon State nearly overcame a seven-run deficit in a 7-6 loss to Oregon Wednesday night at PK Park.
The Beavers, down 7-5 entering the ninth inning, nearly rallied to tie the game. Trevor Larnach walked with one down. Caleb Hamilton, pinch running for him, scored when Christian Donahue singled to right and the ball got past right fielder Jakob Goldfarb for a two-base error.
Oregon closer Stephen Nogosek, however, managed to get Nick Madrigal to pop up to first for the second out the inning. He finished the game with a strikeout of Logan Ice.
Church came on in relief in the second, the last of three pitchers in the inning as the Ducks scored seven. He allowed a double and a single, but recovered to surpass his previous long of 4 1/3 innings against Utah last season. His six strikeouts also set a career-high, and he allowed just three baserunners after the second – one via a walk and two by hit by pitch.
Oregon State (26-11 overall) battled back from the seven-run deficit with a three-run fourth. Michael Gretler, Andy Atwood and Jack Anderson drove in runs via a single, sacrifice fly and groundout.
The Beavers trimmed Oregon's (18-16) lead to two with a two-run sixth. Anderson singled for his second RBI of the game, then watched as Trever Morrison lined out to center, enabling Billy King to come in from third.
Donahue and Madrigal paced the Oregon State nine-hit attack with two hits apiece.
Christian Martinek made his first career start and worked one inning, allowing a hit with two runs and a strikeout. He was, however, saddled with the loss to drop to 0-1.
Cole Stringer started for Oregon, allowing one walk with three strikeouts in two innings. He improved to 1-0.
Nogosek picked up his 10th save after allowing a hit and an unearned run in the ninth.
The game was the second of the second of five Civil War series games presented by PacificSource Health Plans, McDonalds, Spirit Mountain Casino and Your Local Ford Stores.
The Beavers return to Goss Stadium at Coleman Field Friday after eight straight games on the road. Oregon State welcomes Stanford for the start of a three-game series at 5:35 p.m. PT.
Limited tickets remain for Friday's and Sunday's games; Saturday's game is a sellout. For tickets, visit BeaverTickets.com or call 1-800-GOBEAVS.
